I like the look of the Shimano Talica 12ii for my Jigstar 350, anyone used one of these?

We use the Talica's for jigging, great little reel for sure. We have been putting the Torsa arm on as its a little longer and feels a bit better when jigging. The single speed is all you would need for jigging and may be a little cheaper than the 2 speed. Great live bait reel as well as it has a very nice free spool.

I think the Talica 12 single speed may come with a 20lb drag cam which is a very good option if you want to use it for light tackle in the future. Good multi purpose reel.

We have been using Talica's now for over 3 years with no issues, between all the boats I look after we have around 30 Talica's in different sizes and all have performed well and handle the knocks.

For very similar money you could get yourself a BX500XN with the longer throw handle arm which is a far better reel for jigging.  The Talica reels were designed primarily for the US market aimed at livebaiting and trolling. They have been used for jigging but are slightly too wide in the spool on sizes 10 and over..

IMO
The Talica is let down by not having an anti reverse bearing, there is a small amount if back play in the handle when jigging, untill the pawl locks into the dog.
Solid well made for purpose, as has been said....just not made for jigging purpose.

thanks MIB, i did think about an accurate, was keen on a JM PE5 until they took the agency away from Chris Wong, they would be nothing in nz if it hadn't been for his dedication and support.
might just bite the bullet and go with a shimano ocea jigger although the star drag part will be a learning curve.

So far pretty impressed with it. It has ample stopping power, Haven't scaled it yet to find out how much it "actually" has but more than ample, Great line hold for a PE5 reel, holding around 420m of PE5, nice and light as well and has the usual jigging reel styling...

Using quattro AR this little reel should be able to stop most anything you encounter. (2 AR's and 2 dogs) and at $500 bucks is going to be a hard little reel to beat.

Have that exact set up.  Understand what is said about the antireverse not being absolutely perfect but doesn't have an effect on me when jigging; I guess that's down to personal preference.  Loaded mine with 85 pound tasline and can vouch for the drag on that reel being very smooth right up towards its max range for extended periods (ran into a massive bronzey recently which I played for an hour - and yes the granny gear was useful and effective then but has limited usefulness on your average king).

As I don't go jigging every week and like to use it for puka sometimes I guess it's an all round set up.  Bought mine in Aussie when I was living there 2 years ago when they seemed to be priced better than in NZ (maybe something to do with the exchange rate back then), haven't done the numbers comparing products in NZ recently; good luck with your purchase.

cheers griff,
have to admit, the more research i do looking for a reel, the harder it gets. i have been hearing good things about the latest model maxels, i have also been looking seriously at accurates. im still interested in a JM PE5. i have a JX avet on it right now and to be honest it has been a solid reel and has given me no grief, the clunk in the AR took a bit of getting used to, i just wonder about its drag capacity and gear ratio (6:1) when dealing with the 30+kg kings....i suppose it is keep looking, keep asking and keep researching until something takes my fancy.

I'm using the Talica 12 two speed and my wife has the T10 model. We love them. We've just started targeting kingis this season so early days for us. I haven't had anything over 20 kgs yet on the T12 but plenty between 15-20kgs and it handles them no worries. Agree on adding the Torsa arm for a better jigging action. Otherwise ours are standard. I think I can get about 12kgs drag on the T10 and the T12 has 19kgs according to manual at sunset. I haven't used any of the models you guys are discussing so can't compare to those. I do have a Daiwa LD40 and would rate this similar to the T10 for drag. I think the Talicas are better though. We use the Daiwa for visitors fishing with us.
