That's the other thing I've been wondering about. I've been under the assumption that they could be used as normal rods if one keeps the drag fairly light? Or maybe not?

Could one use a T-curve for example and put slow pitch jigs along with the regular inchikus on it, or is some action lost?

This will be my first overhead set.

My t-curve works slow pitch jigs better than my synit inchuku rod does. Don't like using the t-curve for inchukus tho.

My two cents worth..

I've got a couple of slow pitch sets. Evergreen Poseidon Rod/Maxel H20c Reel and a Yamaga Galahad 63/2/Ocea Jigger 2000 NRPG. I've also tried slow pitch on other gear - soft bait sets, baitcast/shimano 100gm inchiku rod (cant remember what rod it is).  All sets have brought home fish and with adapting your technique its easy enough to get a decent movement on the slow pitch jig.

That said and getting all fussy -

The 'cost' of getting a rod that has enough grunt to load up the rod while fighting the fish is that it wont flip the slow pitch jig horizontally as nicely by itself with a rotation of the reel handle i.e the rod wont load up nicely and recover. My Galahad 63-2 has more bottom end power than the Poiseidon rod, but because it is slightly stiffer all the way through it requires a bit of a lift of the rod to get the jig working properly. Especially in shallower water. Not much of a big deal unless your a fussy bugger.

Looking at what you have written above and budget - I would look at the jigstar slow jerker rod which I think is soft enough but still has some grunt. You could pair it with an Maxel H20c ( going over budget a bit )which is grunty enough for kings or there are lots of other reel options. Keep away from the baitcaster in my opinion though. Good thing about getting a decent reel is you can throw it on a light mechanical jigging rod and target kings.

Grasshopper that was really useful. Thanks.

Though I did play with a Calcutta 200d in FishCity today and fell in love. I am so getting that reel.

Not too concerned about kingfish at the moment. Have mainly caught snapper and kahawai, and will be targeting them.

Another reel option is the Poseidon 200R or even the 300R, great little reels and way cheaper than Maxel
200R around the $300 rrp

Well the final choice was MarkE's Smith SLP C60ML with a Calcutta 200d on top.
The Calcutta was already spooled up at FishCity, with about 150m of (I think 20lb) Powerpro, and nylon backing. Lovely smooth drag and in a very compact package.

Looked at that rod, and the Palms Metal witch and went for the heavier rod. The Palms had better action with the light jigs, and could handle 2kg of drag though it was bent right over. It was very similar in that respect to my 1-3kg and 2-5kg trout/light softbait rods. Since I already have those rods that can work the very light jigs, I went a bit heavier.

Still will work a jig alright, and can handle as much drag as my little reel can pump out. I've the Calcutta set at 2kg of drag and have marked it with twink so I can crank it up to 3kg or down to 1kg with one full turn.

Caught a nice trevally with it on the first drop by Tauranga harbour's outer marker. Green 40g Inchiku.
