Hello,

Relatively new to jigging & wanted to ask a question in relation to drag setting for my new jig rod.

TICJK450SP

Rods got a PE4-9 rating I know that means nothing in relation to dead lift ratings etc.

What s the max drag I can run on these rod blanks?
Anyone used these rods before?

I've got a offshore 7500 with 80lb sufix 832 on it while I save up for a lighter reel.

I wont be fishing on max drag I want to know that if I get into a kingi over rough ground I can wind the drag right up without worrying about snapping my new rod ;)

As long as you don't high stick it you won't/are unlikely to break it. Most people don't fish anywhere near as much drag as they think they do. Crank it up and hold on.

A lot of fishos are paranoid about letting their precious line slip off their reels.....IMHO...10 to 15kg is about all you are likely to need for general locations(non tiger country).....anymore could see you going over board or connections bust....unless you are built like Arnie but even then those types are not always as strong as they look......a smooth drag is very important....I always set my drag so i could pull it off the reel by hand with reasonable force........then tighten a little after the strike.........then as long as i could lift the fish without the drag slipping....that was fine.......one of my best kings was caught with a reel that had max drag of 7.5kg a shimano baitrunner 6500 and i didnt have it anywhere near max drag(LBG)..fish still got tired= 22.5 kg..........enjoy yourself......enjoy the power of the run......thats fishing ....if he does you...sobeit....but of your still connected after 2 or 3 runs the odds are in your favour.......just work on getting the fish off the bottom asap. Its just a straight up and down battle off the boat..use your rod conservatively....primarily to lift the fish...LBG is a different storyWink

I jig with my drag pretty light as I tend to hold my rod fairly loosely while jigging.
If you add to much and dream a bit you could lose your gear if the drag is wound up.
Few days ago took a nice king close to the surface and was surprised, so nice to have light drag.
Also if you jig a snap it's nice to have light drag so you don't pull it's head off!
I agree with the other posts, mostly high drag is not needed so why risk loosing a knot or something and your fish.
Just add drag as you fight to adjust for the fish you have, unless you are onto large animals over structure.
The reel you have tend to bang a bit while jigging if it hasn't changed from when I owned one.
They don't have infinity anti reverse so go bang bang bang as you jig (hope I got the right reel but pretty sure).
I found I liked jigging and changed gear (went overhead as well) pretty quick and now I jig very often.
If you do want to crank it up I would say the setup will handle lots of pressure fished properly.

Enjoy! report back..........

Lite drag might equal more sport but if your fishing any where near the bottom you need to be able to react quick keep the fish moving or as we all know he will be off with your new blinged up jig!

Thought for the day: if I had a dollar for every jig I've lost   I could buy some more jigs!
