lovely start to spring today, looks like we've got a week of plenty of sunshine and not much rain fall...

....it's got me thinking about spring-time Koi's, how are things going? any fresh reports/rumors about the fish livning up after winter yet? especially interested in the lower waikato and the connected streams/lakes Smile

Went for my first koi mission today. Limited knowledge of the species, but found a likely spot near Tuakau Bridge about a month ago. Groundbaited the area with about 3/4 kg of corn and then went surfcasting at Port Waikato for the afternoon. Returned about 4 hours later and used the rest of the 1kg bag for bait and burley.
Got absolutely taken to the cleaners on one fish. Never saw it, but must have been a koi. Only 3kg line though, so lesson learnt there!
Had packed up and about to leave around 5.45pm when I saw some splashing further upstream. Had to investigate, and glad I did.
Must have been 12-15 carp tailing in shallow water. Most looked around 5 pounds, but then I've never weighed one. Quite amazing seeing all those tails on the surface. One I got so close I reckon I could have netted it.
One of those tails did look appreciably better than the others too, so there must be a few big boys about.
Next time!
