Leaving this mornig with my wife for a couple of days.

I am on my third trip and think I must be due to find a group of bigger kings to jig.

Will spend tonight in Spirits if we stick to our plan and stay under the north cape light tomorrow and home tues morning.

Over the last couple of trips I have found some decent foul but no one home on those trips so fingers crossed.

Interestingly I am leaving behind doubtless bay which is pretty much full of fish at the moment to go someplace else..............

Gotta take advantage of a good 3 day forecast though.

Back home.

Always blows me away to snapper fish and hang out around the cape and spirits bay.

We had some great weather and awesome fishing!

Almost ran into a whale today on the way down, it surfaced right in front of us.
Lucky we were only putting along at 11knots.
Very cool.

At one point we were jigging a rise off spirits and after landing one kingfish (only a few around) I couldn't get a break from large snapper taking my jig!

My Wife Nancy got a pb on a strip of bonito and also jigged a couple of nice snaps.

We only kept what we killed and released the rest but still had to limit our fishing time to avoid Filling the cooler space.

Last night at dusk I was having a softbait and getting scoffed at or just above the bottom every cast.

I did at one point have a very large snap on that released itself before I had a chance to take his picture and introduce myself, very rude!

In terms of jigging kings I still did not crack it but released a few nice fish up to 15kg.

I feel sure an epic session will offer itself at some point up there for me.

Sadly I will have to go back now and do it all again............

I didn't take a picture of Nancy's pb snap but did take one of her with a pretty typical snap for the trip.

As an interesting aside I switched her to a circle hook in 7/0 to try and prevent swollowing which wasn't working.
At some point I remarked how with my softbait I never have a hook taken down and thought holy sh#t I should put a softbait hook on her rig.
I cut her sinker off and tied on a 1oz jig head and she baited that up and no more swallowed hooks!
Added to that I like how with a softy hook you can grab the lead part and lever the hook out pretty easy...
Anyone else do this for bait fishing?

Just off the drop off at that point. Pretty deep about 60m.
Lots of sign so we had a prospect.

There were plenty in 25m just south of the light at change of light also.

But the most impressive sign was on the sand in 35m past hooper point and around that rise that shows on the chart in spirits.

They were just taking a 300grm jig up to about 10am then they went off the bite.

I reckon it would have been epic at sun up or sundown in that area but we didn't hang around to see.

It's always good there but this time we couldn't get away from the snaps.

Most fishy we have found it up there yet so a blast for sure.
