Looking at either the penn battalion 30lb or Shimano backbone slow pitch rods for cod in the deep south fishing 40m depth max with 150g or thereabouts jigs and a battered sl20sh as the reel any preferences on these two or other suggestions under 150 notes? Thanks in advance fellas

Big smileI dont get it , my experience with Blue cod is that if you put anything in their field of view  they will bite it  regardless of how its delivered LOL. I just never thought of getting gear specifically to target Blue cod . Gotta admit tho  I do like the idea of  not using messy baits .
I wish I was young again .... Id be heaps smarter than this time

Would you look at a spin setup, most spin reels have good drag and not badly priced.

Nah keen to go overhead I reckon the old sl20sh will be ok for the humble cod got a saltist 30t but is spooled with 80lb braid so a bit heavy for this job

Pretty hard to find a reel better than this for the price

https://www.marine-deals.co.nz/fishing-reels/penn-slammer-260-spinning-reel

These are great reels as well fished with one for years pretty bulletproof

Here’s another cheap setup

https://www.marine-deals.co.nz/slow-micro-jigging-combos/tica-tactica-lcx100r-cnlb66mh2c-jig-combo-6ft-6in-10-20lb-2pc

I fish sliders and micro jigs in deep water with this type of setup

40lb normally pretty heavy but for bashing cod... horse them in. With a Slosh20 you're not exactly doing finesse fishing.

Can be a lot of fun catching them on slow jigs, as long as the snakes aren't out taxing you every second drop.

Thanks guys the penn rod is on the way the tica reel looks tempting as it has instant anti reverse unlike the clunky ratchet on the sl20sh. However dunno how that tica would hold up. The sl20sh is tough and parts are still available. Final thing I need is slow pitch jigs in 100-200g. Thinking of AliExpress as don't want to feed expensive jigs to couta which are a pain in summer down here. Any ideas on good cheap options?

These are a very good reel for the money

Kaveman tackle has a good selection of lures.
