There is a theory going around that with the current inshore fish stocks (NZ) being at a low point that the big dolphins pods are adding significantly to the problem through the shear volume of fish they eat.

Some specialists are thinking that a few less dolphins may assist in a bio mass recovery. Theory is that the predator balance is out of kilter.

the quicker they knock the MAUI Dolphin off the better, it will be back to normal,
at the moment they are banned from very large area's, mainly because of the few that are left,
even so we have some dickhead in Recreation still using gill nets from the shore,

The exclusion zone for Maui also protects the fishery.

That's a good point there cirrus. But the exclusion zone is only for set nets, not trawlers, I believe. Wish there were a few Mauis in the b.o.p.! 😄

Well thought we saw the end of this thread. But last night a mate in Aussie posted the gurnard from 8 bells,I responded with 8 bells video and explanation on how it happens.
Actually got hold of the owner of 8 Bells via facebook and had a little discission on the waste.

and still they drag up your spills, but i keep posting your video response
Excuse me Paul Carnahan but could you kindly enlighten me as to what you are refering too? My boat is in napier and we have not been fishing for 3 weeks
They keep dragging up the spill from out west 2/3 yrs ago,and you responded on how a gurnard net works, small fish escape etc

I am no commercial fan but why keep flogging a dead horse in posting lies, yes you have a tough job in the elements and that I do respect. Scott Macindoe said your one of the good buggers out there and I respect that but as you know as well as i do there are few in every industry who do not care.Incidentally the leaked reports I feel are not accurate same as the simmonds report, yes there is wastage but I am not going to debate this with you, niwa says 6%,if the wastage is what some say the fisheries for commercial and recreational would of collapsed years ago. Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul, yes those figures from the Simmons report are off the planet but there was a lot of wastage in the 70's & early 80's but i think a lot of what he was referring to was deep water boats in the south island. We run a very Professional operation and we waste nothing, we have quota cover for everthing we catch. We have satellite monitor on our boat now and it is switched on 24/7 even when we're in port for our own protection. Paul we have far to much to lose to be cowboys and contrary to what a lot lot of recriational fishers may think, we have the greatest respect for our resource. My son will take over the fishing business one day and i also 2 other children and seven grandchildren that like myself enjoy recreational fishing too. I genuinely believe we need to protect our fishing resources both for commercial and recreational . Kind regards Arch
