A company claiming to be one of the biggest fishing for premium tuna in the Pacific has admitted Chinese firms have been breaching their catch quotas for years and says it expects to escape penalty for its actions.

Stocks of the species, targetted by the China Tuna Industry Group, are at at record lows and scientists are warning immediate action is needed to toughen existing quotas.

The admissions by the company came in documents submitted to the Hong Kong stock exchange in support of its expansion plans,

WTF    its a total joke,
bet they are laughing their heads of.. who is going to stop them??????????

I guess the NZ Tuna fleets relationship with the Chinese is a bit like the NZ recreational communities relationship with our NZ commercial fleet. They know that they are cheating, they know that the fishery will get destroyed if it carries on, but they can't do a damn thing about it.

Yep, nothing can be done about it, short of declaring war on China and sinking their fleets.
They will bribe any pacific Islands governments, a quick million backhander to a few well placed individuals will get them all the quota ,and more , they want, no questions asked. You don't think the Chinese govt gives "Aid" to these countries out of the goodness of their hearts d you? That is purely a western conceit.no, the Chinese will give a nice shiny new airliner, like to Tonga and schools, hospitals, roads.....but there is always a cost....see that rainforest over there? Not any more you don't. Tuna? What schools of tuna? Nope, can't see any of them either.
I know it is a very bleak way of looking at the world, but it ain't going to change without massive political force and frankly, no one CARES a damn about some fish.
It is only my overwhelming natural humility that mars my perfection.

You know something Stu? At least the Chinese are paying something. The US, Japan, Aus, NZ etc etc just took fish from those waters for decades until the creation of worldwide EEC's stopped those countries from performing their own rape and pillage. As for the fish stocks, anything that roams in international waters is stuffed. That is the nature of unregulated commercial fishing world wide. Catch it and get rich before the next guy catches it. There is no tomorrow because we know how those next guys think (just like they all do)!!!

reading other report from the region from Green Peace,
it appears Korea is one of the worst offenders, they dont even give a Sh#t about the new reserves put in place nor have any quota, they just go catch what they like when they like,
because there no one has the balls to blow the barstools out of the water...
