Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive lightish jigging rod for an Okuma VS 45 (spinning type reel).  I wil spool it with 20 or maybe 30lb braid, with a view to jigging around the gulf, under workups and maybe for Kingies (bearing in mind we don't get huge kings in the gulf as a rule).

I've not jigged before hence don't want to spend the earth on custom jigging gear - Yet.  Budget of about $150.

Should I get the hang of it and decide to go for big kings then I will splash out on a proper jigging set up, but I'm really looking for a rod that I can take when we go our SP fishing in the gulf, so that should an opportunity present itself then I can quickly switch over to jigging mode from SP's...

Or am I pushing the proverbial uphill?

RA .......... you can get a Berkley Dropshot spin rod for $135-140 delivered from Trademe.  "Discountfishingsupplies".co.nz
or Fishabell from ChCh.
come in all weights up to 37kgXH,probably a bit heavy for what you are looking for, maybe a 8-12kg spinrod for that reel.
Make sure that you get the spin model not an overhead
Good luck

Thanks mate - was thinking along those lines... I've got a starlo Stix 5-8KG which is probably OK for very light jigs, but anything bigger and I'll need a heavier weight rod...  Plus with something like that I can probably manage biffing a few poppers at kings in the gulf...

Yeah I have to agree for jigging - a short Berkley Drop Shot rod 10-15kg.

If poppers are in the mix, consider an Okuma X-factor 10-15kg rod. Saw these at Lauries and was quite impressed. This is a longer rod but you will need length for casting.
You will know when your rod is inadequate so start off comfortably and  upgrade after you've busted your rod on that first big King.
give it death!

The Pioneer rods jig surprisingly well but you will need to match them to jig weight.  We've landed some good 20+kgers just with the 2040 rod.

This Forum is going to be very popular with me.....Jiggy Jiggy and bouncey bouncey every time Chris posts
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

hello rank amateur,
Just wondering if you selected a rod yet?  I am in the same position as you, I also have a vs 45 that i bought for s-b but found it to heavy and my arm were getting sore, since changed to a vs 40, but now the 45 is sitting in the cupboard with no rod. I have only caught a couple of accidental kingis but am keen on learning the ins and outs of targeting them correctly on jigs,
