Hi All,
I was lucky enough to experience a recent fishing charter with offshore Adventures. All we did was mechanical jigging. While I probably looked like a landing assist on an aircraft carrier with my arms flailing in every direction I did manage to get hookups !

So now you guessed it , I would like a jigging setup to target Kingfish. The gear on the charter was top stuff so I've been a little spoiled I suppose.

My gear thus far compromises of a light lure combo for Softbaiting & micro jigs.
I have a heavier setup for livebaiting and a strayline baitrunner setup.

Most of my fishing is never deeper than 50m and around top kawau island to the noises.

What a good starter combo? and what jigs are recommended.

Theres a fair amount of material on line&knot setups to put me in the right direction.

Lets hear some advice!

The semi-decent starter combos, if you're buying new, would be the Shimano Backbone Elite + a Spheros SW or Saragosa SW, probably in 10000 size, if you are ok with spin jigging. Overhead, probably an Okuma Tournament Concept jig rod (or the Metaloid one for a little more) plus an Okuma Metaloid 5s or 5Ns. Okuma also worth a mention in the spin category, again Tournament Concept or Metaloid with one of the old silver Azores reels on them, could get setup for less than 400 dollars (plus braid) with that combo.

There are some very good jig rods that cost a little more and pop up on sales from time to time. The CD Rods Nano Fast Jig is one that springs to mind, currently $245 for the overhead 200-300g model at Marine Deals.

It might be worth spending a little more if you think you'll do a bit of it, and nice jigging gear is fairly popular so holds its value reasonably well.

If you don't mind going used, all sorts are available - Shimano Twinpower is a good option for spinners, or any of the "dedicated" jigging overheads (Accurate, JM, Maxel, Shimano Ocea) or more general purpose, Talica or Trinidad 16NA, Okuma Andros and the small Makairas, Daiwa Saltiga (overhead or spin) plus some of the odd brands like Avet all do good reels.

thanks mate that was very informative - 
I have a Penn Fathom 15 reel which I luuurve which is mated to a Ocean Assassin 7ft PE1-3 rod which I use for micro/light jigging. I guess I could just get the rod for now and use the same reel in the interim.
I'll wait till the boat show as I may pick up a deal there *hoping.

I forgot about Penn, they have some good options. Fathom 25 Lever Drag Narrow springs to mind.

I wouldn't use the Fathom 15 - nice reels and good drag on them but too wide for mechanical jigging. You need a narrow reel or the braid will stack up on one part of the spool because it's near impossible to jig and manage line lay at the same time. Part of why I changed to spin actually, I jig like such a wonky ******* that even narrow reels had trouble with line lay.

Second issue is that 50lb braid is about the lightest you want to go for jigging, and that will kinda ruin the reel for microjigging.

thanks now I know the purpose of narrow reels, I always thought it was like that so it was a smaller overall profile.

What is your budget for jigging gear?
Most decent jigging gear will easily double for live bait.  So consider ditching your current live bait gear giving you more $'s to spend on jigging gear.  
For 50m, you'd be looking at a rod in the range of PE3-5, 150-300g.  Something that is serious high performance but low cost will be Jig Star Ninja L (rrp $420).  A suitable overhead reel would be Maxel F50CH (rrp $825).   If you had visions of heavier gear, then go Ninja ML with Maxel F60H reel for just a few $'s more.   Prices are RRP so you might find good used rods or reels on the second hand market.

You often see ocea jigger reels going cheap around the place.......eg 4000P ....in their day they were 800 dollar reels.......bullet proof and not much goes wrong with them......yes there are newer reels like JM and Maxel( the same reels pretty much) and they are lighter than oceas but i will never get rid of mine.....2500P/4000P/5000P.
Ive used them a to live bait(star drag) with as well and parts are available from shimano.....i have a few mates who love their ojs as well.
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.
