Very interesting mowerman. Apparently this type of fish mincer has been in use by the Southern squid fleet for some time as a means of reducing seabird fatalities. I came across a newsletter from the Albatross center discussing trials in 2007 and at that time they were installed on five vessels.
It was a joint project managed by the Seabird Technical Advisory Group between DOC, MFish, WWF, Deep Water Group and South East Resources Ltd.

Posted this on another thread.

Hmmmm. Sounds ominous.
From the blurb. "innovative solution to offal AND NON QUOTA DISCARDS to reduce seabird attraction".
There you go. The perfect cover for wastage/dumping. Seabird protection. Environmentalism.
Mana from heaven for the com industry and a beleaguered MPI.

In other words there will be no more visible floating/washed up evidence of wastage/dumping. It then becomes a case of out of sight out of mind and the comms will claim an advance in technology has drastically reduced their wastage/dumping making them more efficient. Problem is, if these mincers are not monitored, the situation could get worse. Heaven forbid.

"We heard that the boat in Tauraga had already discarded 500 tonne of fish through its new hogger,if this is true the BOP is finished as a fishery"
