Have been fishing the SPs for a while now, straylined, used flashers and live baited occasionally, and once or twice a year treat myself out on a charter.

Basically love trying different methods, but have never tried jigs (although for some strange reason I have purchased quite a few when in the tackle shop - Its like a kid going to a candy shop)

The question is: fishing from HMS Minnow (all twelve feet) what sought of depth do I need to get in to jig with some success ? and with what weight jigs. I fish off the Whangaparoa Peninsula.  Very keen to get a couple in the bin on Jigs this summer.

Quantity of fish isnt my driver, its getting out there rying new things and having fun, and getting a fresh feed fr the table same evening.

Hi Fred Onion.....
of2fsh is onto it....

just one other thing you will need is a sea anchor of some type, now before you run out and buy one, just try using a fish bin or a couple of bucket.....

tie a rope to both handles on the fish bin or tie two buckets with a single rope to each you choose.....

now you deploy them from ether end of your boat, up to you which end you use.... i would use the stern if it wasnt to rough and the bow if you are a bit worried about the waves coming over the back in the size boat your fishing from......

the reason for this set-up is believe it or not you can drift too fast for the fish to get a hold of your jig......

i use one regardless of what the condition are doing and only remove it when it hangs straight down......

one other tip you may know or not is to cast ahead of the boats drift, by that i mean which ever is the strongest wind or tide....

one other to remember is once the jig hits the bottom lift it off again as quickly as possible the fish is waiting and want stick around if your not keeping it moving....

hope this helps nail your first fish and many more to boot......
