Given that soft plastic fishing has really taken off and guys have been upgrading their tackle from the entry level $200-300 combos to $1000+ combos.  Do you see the same happening with jigging tackle?
 
If you wanted specialist jig gear, what $'s do you consider reasonable for-
  • entry level
  • mid level
  • expert level

also what available tackle would you consider occupies those catagories?

I have just purchased a stella 20000 and combo rod deep jig 400 cost me 1250 with 80 lb multi coloured. I am happy as hell with reel but the rod rated at 37 kg is purhaps not up to standard. I am waiting to see if I can get hold of a blue rose (yum) I guess that I like good gear would I call my set up expert? Not sure
 
I spend approx a grand on a trout fishing rod because liked the feel and know the rod will do what it is meant to do. I am also sure that a much cheaper rod would have done a similar job, but when the chance of a life time comes around to catch a dream sized fish having a gear failure would be pretty devistating(sp) and a risk I am not willing to take.
 
Buy the best gear you can afford then add 20%

I sort of judge jigging tackle as follows:

Entry:
around 450ish (saltist, pioneer rod)

Mid:
Tcurve(400)/Okuma(270) and around 500 for a reel

Top of the line:
Jigging master, with ocea jigger, blue heaven etc etc.

For my money (not enough LOL) its a matter of personal preference. I know my rod and reel (Okuma, 5 foot, 24-37 jigging rod/Duel speedy 20) will catch 99% of the fish im going to encounter, so I cant (yet) justify the addtional 600 - 800 bucks on top of what I have already spent for that extra little bit of comfort (less weight, nicer rod action, etc).

I reckon the best value for money setup in NZ at the moment would have to be a ProGear 30 on a Pioneer 3050.

Murf007 - Nice outfit and probably in the mid/expert class.   As you suggested, the rod is the weak link and does not match the reel in capability or reputation.  The combo is capable of handling anything you are likely to catch in NZ waters and should serve you well.  Blue Rose rods are very expensive, unavailable here and reputation is varied according to Asian reports.  PM me if you want more info.

I have owned a torium 30 and deepjig 400 for 2 years now and caught kingfish to 34kgs on it with 50lb braid they have both preformed faultlessly until recently. The toruims drag has started to deteriate but considering it is a 30lb reel that is to be expected . Both are in the mid range in price . love the action on the deepjig but will be replacing the torium with an OCEA jigger. This set up would have at least 20 fish over 20kgs to its credit so am happy with how much it cost around $700.
 
Chris , was lookin at PROGEARS but am led to believe they have gone out of business can you shed any light on this? As would consider one but not if they have no backup!!

ProGear was owned by 2 brothers who have broken up.  The remaining brother is trying to relocate the entire factory and continue as normal.  What is annoying is that they are ignoring industry calls to respond in any way to put down the rumours of total closure.  Pro Gear have too much history and fame to simply not re-open and the prolonged silence is deafening.
 
I'm hoping that they will re-enter shortly as the call for their twin-drag upgrades is getting very loud and of course sales of existing Pro Gear reels depends on the confidence that they will still be around.

Being a captain Cheapo, I have what I consider a cheap-mid cost jigging set-up of the Berkley 15-30 dropshot (about $150 rod) and an Avet LX reel, loaded with 50lb braid... the reel was $300 or so I think.
However, I have recently bought myself a little Penn Torque 200, and I gotta say, it is a real honey of a reel. But that would make it a $600 set or so I guess, so is that mid level or entry level?
Mid level I think.
Entry level, well, I think any rod and reel set with moderate speed and moderate-fast taper would do... decent reels though, not el cheapo nastios.
As for the top of the line stuff, welllll..... hmmm. I be but a poor peasant, and cannot see myself spending that sort of lolly on toys.

sneak preview eh?  The Terminators and rest of the Power Spell range arrive here early November - I hope!  The Terminator rod range is JM's answer to a low cost rod but still up there in quality and performance.  A tough ask!   Terminator rods arriving are in the 200g,300g,400g models.  They still feature quality fuji components and are a small level down from the regular Jigging Master Power Spell range.  Prices are uncertain but l'm hoping they will be around the $450 - 500 region.  These rods are worth holding back for and they are a cheaper version of the top end JM Power Spell rods - just another couple months now.
