Thought I'd start a thread for everyone to share their thoughts on this topic.
 
My main jigging outfit has 80lb braid which I use mainly for kings. I attach about 3m of 100/150lb shock leader to the braid. The braid is connected to the leader using a mid knot which is a very slim knot. However, this is a pain to tie while on a rocking boat so I would revert to a spider hitch and Yucatan knot when re-tying on the go.
 
After losing a couple of jigs to couttas, I have been experimenting with a 6" twisted double on the leader where it connects to the jig ring. The double is twisted so that the assist hook has less chance of getting tangle with it. No bite-offs so far.
 
The double is tied on to a solid ring using a palomar knot. This is where the jig is attached via a split ring. The assist hook is simply looped on to the solid ring. This way, both the hook and jig can be changed independently of each other.

Hi sooshe,
I like the PR knot best, no way it can slip, and its a piece of cake to tie on a rocking boat, plus faster than a midknot, or bimini combo. Ill never trust a spider hitch again.

Penn 10x is the best cuda roota around. Cheap and as abrasion resistant as No8 wire (well nearly...)

I also do 5-7 inches of twisting and 2 crimps (similar to marlin lure rigging) to a thimble, to the solid ring.

Interesting to see what others have been using.

Thanks BenK. Will give the Penn 10x a go when my Pioneer leader runs out. I was put off by the rather opaque nylon used on the Penn, but since you are still catching fish, it must not matter Smile.  It's amazing how razor sharp those coutta teeth are. My last jig was lost while trying to unhook one over the side of the boat. One shake of the head, and the 100lb leader was sliced cleanly through.

im fishing a three foot bimini twisted double in 24kg braid connected straight to a 130 pound wind on leader. i guess the leader is around 3m. just done with dacrom to mono as with your game rigs.

Oh yeah, makes life fun doesnt it. Although, payback is a *****, in the cudas case LOL, "tag" and release...

I was initially put off as well, but wouldn't even consider anything except maybe fluro now.

Big Moocher,
Have you ever had a windon slip?

I thought maybe the jigging action (load/no load) would do funky things to the windon. Have you ever had any worries with it?

Use similar to Benk with the pr knot but just use a uni knot for the mono/fluro connection to the solid ring.
seems to work.

Why not use a small wire trace slightly longer than the jig in winter ?

Dont really like the idea of wire. Plus they will still attack the wire join.

My rig will last 1 really hard cuda mauling, but  alot more minor 'attacks'. I now just take jig loses on the chin and except ill lose the odd one. Plus only use cheap jigs where I expect cuda.

Have you tried wire straycat? and if so how have your results been on the kingies?

not as of yet. make sure you buy either good ones or do your own and they should be fine. more of a wory is the braid cutting through the dacron where the loops connect. i just make sure to check it regularly. good thing is though that you can take the wind on off really easily if you dont want to fish with it there.

If you have a couda problem just get a pack of that wire with coating that melts with a lighter about 30cm does the trick ( aprox the length of the jig)

Yeah, Ive used that stuff for ultra light in the tropics otter. Damn good stuff ay. Id actually forgotten about it...

I use it quit a bit in very short traces even for snapper straylining just make it slightly longer than yr bait

Not much you can do when the couta are thick, i have had them attack my joining knots, this can be a real pain as you need to retie the whole rig. Flouro carbon helps as it has a greater abrasion resistance and you can get way with lighter leader, but if they hit the knots it can be an expensive loss.

[Have you tried wire straycat? and if so how have your results been on the kingies?

Winter fishing for puka  I always start with a jig down first to see which way the boat drifts .
i now have 4 mauled jigs( wired ])and have lost a lot less than before .
Two weeks ago at the mokes two good kingis between cuda hookups . no lost jigs.
