Garmin echo 100, any good?

I need a small CHEAP sounder for my rubber ducky. I plan to turn it into a portable solution and transom mount the transducer via a clamped rod. I think the trolling motor might be handy for this.

At the moment they are about $100 new, sound like a good deal?

I had one in a boat I bought, only used it a couple of times before I fitted the sounder from my previous boat.  Sure, it isn't flash like modern sounders but it depends what you want it to do.  If you want to drift over a workup and pick out individual fish to target then you will be disappointed.  If you want to know what depth of water you are in and look for features on the bottom and look for general fish sign then it will suffice.  But you would probably get something better second hand from someone upgrading an old sounder for your $100.

Hard to beat for $100 I reckon. I had one fitted to a kayak (inside, shooting through the plastic hull) and was surprised how well it went.
I could easily see my soft bait in 15m of water and it would pickup fish in 20m. It probably went okay out deeper too, but I never had the kayak out further. I could see both hooks/baits on a flasher rig and see fish coming before they bit! like I said, for 100 bucks I thought that was very acceptable performance. I was only expecting to read bottom structure and depth. Temperature was surprisingly accurate too event through the plastic hull.

thats exactly what i want it for, depth and structure sign. its a 10ft rubber ducky, im not looking to ID fish. i need something that runs on a low current draw as it will be fed by a 12v battery in a waterproof box.
