number of lures could be dictated by weight limits for luggage and also number of days fishing planned, I will be endevouring to take a dozen or more with me next time we head to the islands (if I can sneak them in the luggage without the cook noticing).
I took a number of lures to aitutaki in June and lost quite a few in the reef - (bit to soft co*k on the drag).
I found some lures cast alot better than others and you want distance and accuracy as well as good fish attracting action.
I would recommend that you get a few individual lures initially and shoot down to the local jetty and try them out for casting and action, this may save you taking lures that you don't end up using.
For me I found the river 2 sea dumbell lures cost effective ($20.00) cast well and attracted the fish.
Halcos pulled the fish well but did not cast as well for me.
I took one preloved nomad cubera (purchased 2nd hand) over as well and it cast really well, popped well and in the 6 casts had 4 follows before being swallowed by a big black GT that took the lure straight into the reef.
If money is not an issue I would be looking to take a few cubera lures over as well. These same lures seem to be marketed under a few different brands - nomad, darkstar, blackjack, el toro.
I wouldn't bother with wire unless you thought you were likely to get wahoo, which are generally out over the drop off and I feel are more likely to hook up on a stick bait than a popper.
