ok guys im sure this has been asked a million times before but im goin to ask it again.

what size stella is best for poppers and stick baits.....?

or

what size stella are you using and why?

im goin to upgrade my popper/stick bait sets this season from the spheros as im sick of busting reels on kings....and think its time to step it up.....

oh and torpedo 7 have stella 8000swpg's for $899 but a lil on the low geared side arnt they?

go for the SW10000, the 8000 comes in HG now too. if you want capacity, the 18000 is the one(20000 spool fits too)

so why the 10k over a 8k  or why not an 8k with a 10k spool?

will be goin to chase gts next year so dont want to under gun myself

I also went for the 10000SW but added the Jigging Master 16000 spool (more capacity) for the GTs when in the Islands.
I might have Alzheimer's, but at least I don't have Alzheimer's.

Do you need more capacity for GT's? I was on the understanding that you needed to stop them fast or you were toast.

10 k spool has more capacity but it fits on an 8,000 body(and vice versa)....so no reason why not...8,000 has a bit more drag but hey what the heck...they both have plenty....high gear of the 10,000 is better for moving the pops quicker and retrieving your line on the sweep with sticks...thats why i got a SW10,000.There is bugger all diff in weight between the 8,000 and 10,000.Wink

reef fish 8000 or 10000, pelagics( tuna/marlin) 18000


plenty of extra spools out there as well if you need to upsize your requirements. costly though

I'd have thought you'd balance the reel to the rod you're going to get ,ie. 8000/10000 with 84/22 and a 18000 with a heavier rod like the monster hunter .

I use an 8000 hg and have a 10000 spool with pe7 on it and the 8000 spool has pe5 . I have the 8000pg also but it's definitely second choice for stick baiting.
I use the pe5 on a BLC 84/18 and that is good for 60-100grs and use the pe7 on a BLC 80/35 which is good for 90-160 grs.
For the weight of Stickbaits you want to use a rod like the BLC 84/22 would be perfect and a balanced reel would be either the 8000 or 10000 ,doesn't really matter which.

Got it on the 10000 spool and think there is about 170 or so , not really sure , and the spool is not overful.

yep, i agree if a gt runs more than say 80m you are gone generally in my experience as they are usually lurking next to bommies/reef etc, on the other hand if you are already casting a long distance and you get hit early on the retrieve you may need a bit of line in reserve.

I have a 10k and an 18k, I tend to use the 10k more as it is lighter and not so hard on the body.  The only issue with the spool capacity is with a stiff wind at my back a long cast makes me hope I don't get a strike on landing.  The spool is pretty skinny at this point with 80lb.  Got my biggest GT on it yesterday estimated at 45+kg and it handled it well.  I have it mated with a Caranx Kibutsu Long Cast.

I have 100lb on my 18k and a rod that will handle big poppers.  It is hard on the body, but sometimes the big bloop is needed to bring the fish up from the deep drop offs.  I also use this reel for jigging for doggies.  The 10k does not have the capacity for 100 metre drops with the factory spool.
Tis better to have hooked and lost than never to have hooked at all.
