Fish for the famous Blue Moki- average size for the area 1.5 - 4 kg with the chance of catching a 5-7 kg fish, a power house of a fish.  Many of us travel north and support the comps up your way, so come on down south and support the Feilding Surfcasting Club who are also holding the 2012 Nationals.

I have spent my fare share of time through that area, the moki are very big. I have seen plenty well over 5kg in flesh in that area to around 8kg. I think as long as the weather plays its part, it will be a fantastic event.

Good luck to those attending, im sure there will be some amazing fishing to be had

Living locally I too have spent my fair share of time through there - as far as line caught fish are concerned 5-6kg fish come out of the bay every year but much beyond that i've not heard of. Let's not get carried away, the vast majority of fish are in the 2-4kg range. But here's hoping the comp produces some big boys!

Do you fish them the same as snaps or more like trevs?
I do not lie about fishing, I willingly participate in a campaign of misinformation.

Shellfish only EditB, the beaches in this area are steep and most fish are caught just over the drop off

Been weighing up entering, so fishing starts at 3pm on the 26th, and the contest finishes 9am the next morning.

A few questions.

How long does it take to drive from Welly to the Moki 1000?

Is the road gravel or sealed?

Is having a 4WD for beach driving useful?

edit: One more, how often is the weather pleasant out that way? eg, whats are the chances of sitting in a sandblaster over night...

AL BG dont take it personal bro, read my post, I dont mention average sizes, I am stating there ARE some big fish there, just because you havent seen a 8kg MOKI doesn't mean they don't exist.................  I have seen the bugas, and not just one or two........

Best baits are crayfish and mussel, softbait crabs also work, caught a few on them when there is nothing else to use, also limpets are a good bait too.

Using a double ledger rig with 3/0 circle hooks will usually do the trick lobbing the bait into your burley only a few meters out. Fish as close to a reef as possible without getting caught up and leaving enough space to play the fish.

The weather this time of the year is mainly 100k westers hahaha but thats what flattens it off nicely for the moki. There seems to be more NE conditions this year. I would say theres a 20% chance the sea will be nice and flat, very rare for the sea to be perfect, thats why the moki are abundant in the area. and so bigWinkLOL

How long does it take to drive from Welly to the Moki 1000?  @1.30 to 2hrs as you have to go over the rimatakas

Is the road gravel or sealed? Sealed for the most part ( its been a while since I have been a long way around there )

Is having a 4WD for beach driving useful? Yes but not essential

Al bg, there are certain people on here that talk a big game, funnily enough it's the same people that talk it up on other forums. Don't know why they do, some of them probably don't need to, some of them obviously do, but to be honest I don't really care. Best just to leave them to it. Hard to find impartial views on this sort of topic I guess.

Will someone attending this comp post up the results please?

Good luck to those attending.

Yes well I guess they're entitled, but when people are coming from miles around it'd be a shame from them to get a false impression. Naturally i'd be delighted for someone to catch an 8kg moki, but in my years in this part of the world i've only ever heard of three line caught moki topping 8kg, and they were all Wellington harbour fish (yes you read that right). I guess I do take some umbrance at it being implied that I don't know my stuff in this area, I commercial paua dived here many years ago in addition to surfcasting. However, each to their own and here's to free speech! And to all those fishing comp "may the wind be at your back, and the sand stay from your crack" - oh and I hope you catch a few Big smile

Q. where do we poop?
Q. are we allowed to setup a tent for guests to take nana naps?

Might seem like stupid questions, but I haven't been before and don't do many trips like this, but am thinking it could make for a nice weekend out. Was planning to bring someone else, hence questions above.

I wouldn't get too worked up about people being mislead into travelling long distances in search of a trophy moki al BG. People will travel long distances to compete in a comp with a bunch of other fisho's, have a few laughs, drink a few bevvies, share a few stories, check out a new part of the country, catch a few fish and maybe even win some money. Some people will probably even travel long distances to get away from their nit-picking wives only to log onto this forum and find nit-picking forum members.

Hope you have a great comp scuzzy, meet some good people and catch some fish.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.
