How many km offshore do you need to go in winter in order to catch fish? (I live on East Coast Bays, Auckland)

Can you catch any fish in the winter in a kayak? Or is it only a summer time thing?

Thanks.

You need one of these lures for the fish you catch up your wayLOL

The solution to any problem - work, money, love, whatever - is to go fishing - the worse the problem the longer the fishing trip should be.

Sure can.   Just dress for the cold and wet.     You will probably do better with natural bait and berley and by targetting reefs.

Haha too true... too true. I caught a snapper which was 11cm long in the weekend.

I live on the shore and I know you can get good snapper in close around the reefs but really never gave it a good crack. I must admit to being a bit of a winter hibernater TBHLOL and I don't really like making my kayak dirty with stinkbait and berley which is best in winter, although softies will work.
Had a lot of success off the rocks in winter though up the coast and that can be applied to yak fishing.

I mostly hibernate, but what I do catch in (Auckland) winters is usually large, so a trip out is worth it.

Also, kayak fishing doesn't have to be saltwater - I've had some great winter trips for trout to those central NI lakes and larger (slower) rivers that allow winter trolling
