I need a bit of help from some pro's FNO, BA, JR,Chad.........sorry if I missed any but I'll get to know you guys in due coarse.

I'm going up to Kuatunu next week for a weeks fishing...........I have a Stabicraft 409 fisher 30h

I want to Target Kings off the rocks and out of the boat on Stick baits and poppers................I have several Nomad poppers and stick baits............bobara's and dogtooth.

I'm going to be casting 37kg braid and need help with my leader...........braid to fluoro?

What is my best option? Wind on leader, Twisted Leader, Spider hitch and cats paw on to coastlock swivel then leaders crimped to popper for easy change of poppers. I'm really confused about what is my best option so I though I'd ask.

I'm running the 37kg braid on a Daiwa Dog Fight and an Offshore 250gm (cts blank) popper rod.

I know a few who use the twisted leader and find it works well but for me i have just been using the knot shown on the vid link below to join my braid mainline to fluro leader and never had any issues. Pretty easy to tie too.

Would that knot have to bang out through the guides or could the flouro just be used as a bite leader?
Very nice knot by the way JR

Sorry if you have to cut through the fat guys.

my two cents worth....firstly nice combo you got there dood! Easiest way would be to tie a bimini double and then loop to loop with a wind on leader(5 or 6 metres...suffix wind ons))....I would use mono as it will sit on your spinning reel easier(supple trace black magic is ok)....Then  a shortish trace(heavier) after swivel 1metre to 1metre and half of either mono or flouro...flouro offers great abrasion resistance...not too long or it effects your casting.....Tie an open uni knot that is formed about a cm out...make sure its tight and good looking, better with mono...This will give some freedom to your popper and it will close on itself when you hook up...then undo and go again....You could crimp too, that would work nicely, use some tubing to protect wear on the line and popper and make a hoop,so you have freedom for the popper...Bloody strong split ring on end could work too..and you could change poppers easily too.I wouldnt use a coastlock swivel for poppering either...balack magic 15kg swivel would be good enough or a ball bearing swivel if you must...line twist isnt an issue with braid.....you could use without a swivel at all and just attach to your leader.
I do 60 turn bimini, which others might not but it hasnt failed yet and its a very tidy knot.
Good luck and have fun.poppering is awesome.Wink

Doesnt sound like the easiest option there laidback dood and seems like a whole to cast thru the guides.

Agree on the split ring tho - use one on the end of my rig ie so to join the fluro or mono to the popper and seems all good. Needs to be a very stong one though. Dont cut corners here.

Wazza - that knot I linked to gives a very slim knot that casts well. It is hardly noticeable when casting once tied properly.  I just use that knot to tie the fluro to the braid and then the split ring on the other end to attach to the popper. Very simple and very effective.

Oh and its JK btw, not JR Wink

Sorry JK................nervs I think.

I like that knot and it's simple as well.................I need simple guys. I don't work in a fishing shop and alot of the braid to flouro/mono is all new to me.

What type of flouro would you suggest JK and weight?.................I'll use owner split rings.
How many turns on the reel for the flouro if any?

Could you post a pick of the Terminal end please JKSmile

Can do the pics tonight or over the weekend if ya like Wazza. Unfortunately I don't work in a tackle store either lol so I'm not near my gear right now.

I've just been using 80lb berkley vanish and find it alright. Its pretty stiff but so is most flurocarbon. Could probably use mono just as easy (and much cheaper) but if going mono step it up to 100lb for the extra abrasion resistance.

And yep ideally you want a few winds of it on the reel - makes handling things a bit easier and less strain on the knot.

Btw, I've done a fair bit of fishing off the rocks around Kuaotunu / Opito as we have a place down that way. Feel free to drop me a PM if ya like.

Wazza.....just tie a PR knot straight from mono/fluro to your braid, easy to tie,100% stength and goes through the guides easy(dont tie too long though)
Uni knot to swivel/split ring combo(you can change poppers/stickbaits easy this way)

PS how do you find the CTS blank? I have just got a Hots Gipang 79XH to put my Stella18k on

Jk's knot will work just fine. Wouldnt bother with Flourocarbon, just 3m of 80-120lb mono (something soft - Black Magic supple is good) attached to a high quality solid ring via a uni knot. Attach your popper/stickbait to this ring with a heavy duty split ring.

Good luck Smile

JK.. that is the Roddy Hays knot, is all i use for softbaiting and can be used mono to mono as well and close to 100% strength.

As I haven't hooked anythang on the CTS blank so far I'll have to get back to you on that...........if I do catch anythang I will include the preformance of the Rod in my report.

Casting wise you can put a popper out to 100-110 meters easy............I'm a very good caster. Of course wind would always play it's roll in the distances so they can very.........

The first half of that knot JK posted is what I use for my mono to fluro when straylining, hadn't thought of adding the uni on top of it
I do not lie about fishing, I willingly participate in a campaign of misinformation.

From the reading I have just done, the additional uni on top was added by Tony Pena to make the knot better suited to braid as he had some experiences of slipping without it.

Gotta agree with the Grotto Dweller here..... I'd stear clear of flouro... as has been mentioned, it doesn't sit well on the spool at all....

Sick set up Kevin, that Gipang XH is a beautiful stick.... look forward to hearing reports of her being used in anger!
