I have been practicing tyeing a few larger flys, but I do not know what to do with the 'thread' when I finish wrapping it around the fly. At the moment I just trim it off then add cement and let it dry, but sometime the tag end of the thread is still a bit loose... So whats the best way to tie off a fly?

I tried googling but I can not get specific enough results.

A couple of half-hitches will do a reasonable job but if you want to do it properly, google "whip finish".

Decided the whip finisher tool was broken, so after a few attempts got the double hitch to work

It is possible to do the whip finish without a tool & that's the way I always did it.
I'll have a look to see if I can find a link showing the way.

The whip finish gives the neatest finish but half hitches work very well too. An easy way is with a ball point pen (Thrim the ned back if you need a bigger hole on SW flies...

Place the end of the tube over the hook. Wrap the thread twice around the pen and slide on... repeat this three times and the fly will not come undone.

I wip finish and use a small tool on smaller flies and do it by hand on the larger ones.

Yeah, I saw the video of tool-less Whip fishing but the half-hitches are working fine.
