Went out for some bluenose yesterday and were catching plenty of small models on the baits.  Dropped my jig down for a run but all I could catch was frostfish.  Every drop as soon as I got in the strikezone I was hooked on to one straight away.  The skinny buggers are rough on the jig paintwork too.

Anyone had similar problem.  I gave up because I couldn't keep my jig down there long enough to catch anything else.

Yeah had the same problem down at Waihau during the Nationals. Got a couple of Frosts on a jig while trying for some puka/bluenose. Was a bit disapointed only catching those as was looking forward to seeing the jig rod load up on some deep sea creatures......

Try cheating just a little... add a small chuck of squid on your assist hook, helps with the puka/bluenose hook ups enormously.

At least they were just frosties... they are easy to land, imagine I you were being molested by couta or gemfish. (well, OK, the gemmies are worth having, but couttas sure ain't)... at least you do not have to fight too much to bring up a frostie... and they are way less likely to just swim off with the jigs as well! :-)
Cheers,
Stu.

Frosties are the worst. They are even stoopider than cuda. They are shockers for hitting knots, or even just biting the line (which is awsome when puka fishign and they chop off 200m of braid and your jig, trust me!)

I hate the skinny mofos

How deep were you Stu, was it a bit lumpy out there? Did you try regular style, bait etc.

You should read up the top properly UH.  Fished baits and got 16 bluenose but all only around the 2kg mark.  Pulling up three at a time.  Few gemfish and terakihi but no puka.  Couldn't be arsed with winding in the small bluenose so subbed in TJ so I could have a jig.  Fished between 200 and 220m.  Bit lumpy on way out but with the sea all the way home so all good.  Trolled back for a while for no luck.  One of gemmies was decent, over 10kg.

Didn't have any trouble with them hitting my knots so that was a bonus i guess benk. Now that I think back we had two of our lines on baits break for no apparent reason.  Maybe it was those cromed up skinny mongrels that did that.

Not sure on numbers but probably 3 as any more sucks for sleeping.  Water still warm with heaps of mahimahi still being taken.  Prob should try go soon and double up with a bit of a troll.

Setup was good as bro.  I just found out the Mount Squash Open is on Anzac weekend so baring injury I will be roped into that one.  Ankle or knee may be too buggered for squash but sweet as for fishing however.
