mmmm...bit of trick photography there  me thinks..would think the one with the big tuna tower would roll less and less 4 guys weight downstairs would all add up...still dont know what it is tho..must research..

I was lucky enough to get a ride on a Bertram the other day. It had Mitsubishi Anti Rolling Gyros onboard and believe me I was IMPRESSED! they told me that Mitsubishi is the only company that has 3 different models of gyros. And now that they no longer have an exclusive agreement with Ferretti, the prices have come way down.  Now they are not only the easiest to install but also the most affordable. What I like about them is that they are so simple. Just bolt em down and plug it in!

How does the thing work then if it doesn't have external fins like a stabiliser system?

think of it as a 1000lb spinning top.

spool up time can be up to an hour. and i wonder what sort of energy consumption it draws once its up to speed - for instance could you run it overnight if youre in a rolly anchorage without draining the batteries?

Yes it like a big top,. It uses a frequency drive to get the flywheel up to around 4000 RPM. Once it is up to speed (about 40 mins) when a wave comes to the side of the boat, instead of the boat rolling the flywheel (which is mounted on a gimbal) swings fore and aft. Through the 'gyro moment principle' the energy from the wave is absorbed by the swinging flywheel which is connected to passive, resistive dampers. This makes for an unbelievably smooth ride. these things are going to change the boating world someday. You do need to have a generator on board. It depends on which model of gyro you need but they can draw as little as 3KW up to around 5.5 KW. There is a website that tells all about them  www.antirollinggyro.com

Of the 3 different sizes of gyros that Mitsubishi makes, the smallest one, the 125T spins at 4400 RPM, the 250T spins at 3750 RPM and the largest gyro, the 375T spins at 3250 RPM.

Until it all goes bad.  I've heard some horror stories with those with dampers failing etc etc.  It's also a bloody huge amount of weight to drag all around the ocean!

Oh, you must be thinking about the Seakeeper... they have old, farm equipment style dampers that have hydraulic hoses hooked up to them. Lots of leaks and fittings to break.

coruba is  cheaper and doesnt need a power supply
