Ok being a newbie to jigging and so far REALLY enjoying the sport.

I was wondering what different styles of jigging, and or jigs do you use when targeting different species of fish.

Hapuka
Bluenose
Snapper
etc

Expression of gratitude in advance.

OH MY GOD

Have you ever waded through the old posts!!!!!! Man alive what starts out as an interesting topic get clouded in side chatter................Yes I do the same terrible thingEmbarrassed. Makes going back looking for info pain staking to say the least. Looks like some of the posts may have had an axe put through them.
Anyways after all of that I read something about snapper using a 7ft firm rod and silver with red head and pink jigs about 120 grams seem to be the go using nylon?? Puka try bottom 10 - 20 with a slow lift flip and wind with normal setup using big heavy speed jigs or same jigs.

The only luck puka fishing Ive had with jigs (1 puka 5kg, 1 bluenose 15kg, countless gemfish) has come about by mechanical jigging but with a really sharp hard jerk with the rod, then a gentle wind down, wait a second then repeat.

I have found 500g at the least to be the most consistant.

Line angle is by far the biggest factor IMO, if the boat is drifting sideways you have pretty much no chance. If the dift is slow, or the skipper is idling into it your chances are way better.

For puka and gemfish I have found the bottom 10m to be the best, but bluenose it can be anything up to 50m up depending on the sign.

The most effective way to jig is when you have wind against current and the fish are sitting on the 'wrong' side of the rock for drift fishing, by positioning the boat on the 'wrong' side you can still get into the fish, when normally drifting wouldnt allow. All in all I dont think jigging for puka is as effective as bait, but it wont stop me from trying

Might help murf?

Cheers Ben all helps.
I have been looking around for some big heavy jigs but the local shops don't carry to many. What are the shops like over your way? Do they carry much in the way jigs?

I went into top catch the other day and they had a big selection of jigs, but pretty much any of the shops around here have a decent range. Im not fussed where I get them, just depends when I need them and where I am.

The best place for short 500g jigs would be www.sportfishingnz.co.nz. Sharp price, good paint, good jigs overall but crappyish hooks and assists and no split/solid rings. So basically you will need to add the costs of hooks and bits ontp of what you see. Still the best values though.

The place for the best 500g jigs would be www.jigsdirect.co.nz and get some of the jigging master rockets off chris, or the super deep zests in 500g, only seen them this heavy in recent times.

Kilwell also have a 520 broken arrow but the paint is ****. Worst of all of them. It makes you wonder why they dont put a couple of coats of clear on before hand. Even if they hiked the price by a buck to justify it it would be worth it but of well, nevermind. The jigs themselves work really well though, just the paint that blows.
