Is anyone fishing Kings of Coro 24-26 April?

Anyone fished it before, looks like some good prizes. $100k for heaviest kingi over 100lb along with others.

They say relaxed rules compared to IGFA, does this include braid?

Where does the fishing area include.

Fished it last year.
From memory fishing area is from cape rodney across to top of barrier then from bottom of barrier down to just east of little bay - waikawau beach.
Sorry not sure about braid.

Yep will be fishing it again.

You are correct - they have relaxed the rules to now include braid. Was IGFA only in the first year and caused a bit of a fuss especially with the soft bait boys.

Boz is right on the area. Been talking of changing it to make it include the rest of coromandel ie down past whitianga but still nothing on that front for this year anyway.

The prizes (apart from the big ones) are pretty crap really. Lots of cheap youvella rods and reels and some aren't that well matched - hows that combo going that you won Boz??

Apart from that it's a pretty well run comp. Great fun too.

That combo was rubbish. 6kg Youvella rod matched with a 10kg Omoto reel labelled as a "15kg set".

Chucked some 6kg braid on it and use it for deep water terakihi etc fishing - doesnt get used much. The rod is actually quite nice but the reel is junk.

What were the fish like last year any big suckers. What did you get your prize for Boz.

Think we will pencil it in. Do you need to get in early for the 'ticket' thing, what about accomodation.

Last 2 years have been tough going due to the weather at the time. That's why they've moved it forward from June to April this year.

A few reasonable kings weighed in last year and quite a few decent snapper but no kings anywhere near the magical 100lb mark.

Dont have to get in early for tickets but accomadation can be tougher. Look at where you aim to fish and where the weighin is and then find somewhere that works for you. We stay 40mins from the weighin but thats because we fish even further away so saves the long drive in the morning to just get to our fishing spots.

Crap comp suck's dick, they told me last year that i could use anything ,braid wire whatever, this was on the phone, on the night of the briefing all had changed you could use braid but if it broke under 37kg if it went over your out, they changed the rules as the comp went on,There was a king caught that went 36kg about 7kg of the money, in winter up there the king's are in shallow water in the little harbour's that are around.
Would not do another one.

thats one thing we noticed in the first year too stellajigger....changing of the rules as the comp goes.

In the first comp the only prize for kings was for the 100lb and we got in to them on day 1 but since weren't big (only around 17kg) we kept it for the table and fed us during the comp. The next day they decided to give prizes for kings wieghed in as people weren't weighing them in which kind of makes sense as why would you weigh in a fish thats not gonna win a prize. Kinda defeats the purpose!

If memory serves me correctly JK. The reason there were prizes for smaller kings from day two was extra sponsorship that was offered after day one. So it wasn't really changing the rules it was adding to the comp.

Ahhh I see Bushie. Didnt know that but does make sense given they need to get the prizes from somewhere.

Guess it adds to the importance of going down to the weigh-in each evening as well as you get to hear the additions to the comp so know what has changed for the next day.

Sounds a bit like they can do what they want, in the rules it even says they can change the fishing area and you have to find out at the weigh in.

The prizes seem to be sorted out now with a lot of sponsors on board.

The dates have been brought forward so fish activity and weather might be a bit different.

Cam did they have testing gear for the braid, how did they expect to test if it went under 37kg? They don't say anything about line class in what I've read.
