Hey there trendsetters. I use to spend a bit of time camping out at Spirits Bay in Far North. Now and again rock hoppers would land what was called 'Ocean Going Kahawai'. These mothers were f**king huge. I think 10 - 15 kgs would be nothing special for these buggers. They looked a little like mullets on steroids with their big rounded heads but was assured they were Kahawai none the less. One I can distinctly recall was laid over the bonnet of my then first car - an Austin Mini (can you picture me in a mini - well it was a long time ago) and it stretched from one side to the other with it's tail almost touching the ground. Probably close to 4 feet in length. Maybe I was just stoned but the memory is pretty firm.
Anybody confirm their genus? Lethal?
Arripis xylabion or Kermedec Kahawai, ocean going Kahawai, etc... found commonly around the Kermies, Norfolk etc...
Yea I am familiar with these fish... they reach northern NZ in summer. Distinguishable by their larger eye and deeply forked tail. They have recently been recognised as a seperate species from A. trutta which is just your garden variety Kahawai...
Yeah, the red ugly monster ate hotgirl out OHHH I mean up
.
correct me if i am wrong, i`m sure you will, but a while ago the record for a Kahawai, land based this is , was around 14 lb, the angler was a member of the north shore club, name is Mac something or other
Zeke if it ain`t broke, buggar it, fix it anyway
yeap lalandi... i know the difference between kgs and lbs and from my job just at a guess i can usually get a kg weight pretty dead on... if i accadently droped a 6-8pounder back i woudnt have really cared...
and yeah alot of people often mistake a large kahawai with a kingi... its pretty uncommon to find them anywhere near that large down in welly that why i was so gutted to lose it... but large kahawai around 10-15kg are not thaat uncommon in the far north parts of NZ espeshilly in the summer months...
