Keel flies are great as they get down quick, and present hook upwards so are semi snag proof.
My recipe;
Hook: SL12S 2 - 4/0
Thread - any colour will do
Keel: Flat lead sheet stolen from garage of friend when not looking
Body: Mylar pipe over keel, tied in at head
Wing: Clown hair - colour optional
Eye - prismatic stick on
Head - I paint mine red. Wife has marvellous expensive revlon stuff that works well. (I'm dead).
Flash/topping: I used some UV stuff in the lavender version, and silver in the lime/yellow version (which looks like a big dayglo sign underwater, fish just race away at high speed, who cares, looks nice to me!! Ian was more diplomatic, suggesting that such colour schemes never work for him outside of the tropics where green/yellow dayglo fish must be common)
