Just wonder whats the main reason for making your own assist hooks?
Is it a matter of being able to use a particular hook, peace of mind or are the stock ones no good?

Badfish, it's mainly because I get great satisfaction out of catching fish on something I've made. Another reason is that I find most of the stock ones do not have wide enough gapes for the jigs I use.

No matter what assist hook you use, soon you have to replace the kevlar.  So you need to learn to make your own at some stage.  a bit like food, you can't keep buying KFC, you have to learn to cook Clown. 
Stock assist hooks are regarded as throw-aways and only NZ & Oz have them with jigs, elsewhere in the world jigs are sold without hooks.  All proper jigging finatics roll their own.

All though I'm not a proper jigger (or proper anything for that matter ) should I ditch the ones on my jigs (already have on some of the warn out ones)?
Admittadly I have been using the assit hooks from my zest jigs for all my jigs, mainly because the gap on the BM and Williamson ones didn't seem big enough.
What hooks suit making your own assists?

That plastic tube that you use over the kevlar, do you also use that over the jig end of your leader too jimi?

Badfish, there isn't much choice around except the Gamakatsu Tuned hook for jigs.  The Tuned hook is a very good hook and should be available in most stores - just ask for them.  Other good jig hooks are from Owner, Fisherman, Decoy and other boutique Japanese brands.   Prices for these hooks are naturally quite high but hey, jigging was never a cheap sport Pinch.
 
You can renovate old stock assist hooks by touching them up with a file and replacing the assist cord.  So all the more reason to learn how to tie your own assist hooks.
