Whats the best technique for targetting puka/bluenose/bass on jigs?
 
Yo yo ing and bottom bouncing?
 
Slow mechanical retrieve?
 
Interested in hearing how you guys have caught them before.

At the 3 Kings & Ranfurly they are often a bycatch on the deeper Kingie grounds so they do respond to a medium speed mechanical jig.  But if you really wanted to target them, then a slow mechanical jig for the bottom 10 - 15 m.  Or you could also just yoyo hard on the bottom if you have trouble working a particularly heavy jig.
 
Pete Francis of NZFN with a small White Isl Bluenose in 280m.
 
Ginga with a 3 Kings Bass approx 60kg in 140m.

Cheers Chris, do you find that a certain colour or a lumonescent coloured jig works better in 100-200m+?

I am thinking about actively targetting them on jigs the next time I head out to White Is.

I suspect that most long-jigs have some lumo, and also that it's quite dark down there.

I just bought an 8w Flourescent trouble lamp from super-cheap-auto for $5.99, solely to re-charge my lumo-lures! (got sick of holding them up to a light)

Yeah most long jigs have some lumo but not all of them.  I do believe that it is a benefit - at worst, it won't hurt! 
One of the best Puka jigs around is the Sanme jig (Super jig from NZFN mag) which has no lumo.  It relies on it's design to create massive vibrations which make it so attractive to Puka and Kingies.
 
Do you find the fluor tube work OK?  A UV light is one of the best as this is the light frequency that is absorbed by luminescent paint.  Never seen it since 1970's discos  LOL  but you can buy small LED lights that are only good for trout flies.  A camera flash gun is excellent too, see previous links to trademe.
 
People have their favourite colours but you wonder just how different they appear in 150m?  I have strong faith in "me 'ol favourite" colour of orange/gold.  This colour in the Zest Super Deep has been near dominating most days.  A lot of people asking about effective colours have been steered towards the orange/gold and they too are now believers.
Maybe this is a confidence thing?  I could try and claim it as pure skill Embarrassed.

Yeah I've flashed them too. Spectacular. But I don't think it hits all the particles like a long time in flourescent or sunlight does. Question of how long the lumo then lasts? It takes a long time to "fully charge" them.

have caught plenty of hapuka on jigs with a yoyo motion colours pink or blue zest jigs.

Firstly let me say that you are causing me to lose concentration. When I said "it is dark down there", somehow my eyes moved to your signon image LOL
 
I used to re-charge LUMO by holding them up to a fluoro-tube galley-light. My arms got tired after a minute or two.

A fluoro-tube car trouble-lamp from super-cheap-auto is about $5.99 or $6.50. Great! I can sit numerous lures around it and leave them there for hours...
 
I have no scientific knowledge how much it takes to re-charge a lumo. Just that the longer the better. Since discos went out of fashion Embarrassed I have no idea where to pinch a UV-light from. Sunlight all day does a pretty awesome full-charge too.
 
Every time I flash them or just expose them for a minute or two, they don't seem to last very long. Although, some may say that just a "residual glow" is sufficient. I'm not a fish, so how would I know? <guffaw>
 
If they have lumo, I say use it. I insist on buying long jigs with lumo, and now you inform me Black is best? Vibrations? It seems I have a lot to learn!Tongue
