Caddis pupa

Hi Guys
I started flyfishing 4 years ago and now beginning to tie my own nymphs.
I had recently tie Caddis pupa and also Caddis larva.

May I know, is these 2 good for only early Dec (early summer) or good the whole month of Spring and summer for Rotorua and Taupo?

Hey mate,

Caddis are the mainstay in a trouts diet.

Generally find them in running water year round.
Just lift any stone in the river and you'll find them.

There are different varieties too that build nets (net building), live in protective cases (cased) and are free swimming very similar to damsels.

I don't fish the area you mention preferring south island waters and this is a go to pattern all the time.

Also, don't forget the caddis emerger or crippled emerger pattern for later in early evening rises.

The shape is right with the carrot profile.

Top one looks like a cased caddis and the bottom one a net building caddis.

Just make sure the colour of the material you use is similar to the substrate of the water and surrounds, although there are definitely variations that lean to a cream colour of the caddis!

Your body material looks like it would be able to take coloured marking pens like light brown, tan, olive green (my favourite) etc. With a bit of coloured ink, you're able to open up a whole new world with this as you continue your tying.

Make sure there is a bit of under weight to get the fly near the bottom too.

Fish them with confidence.
