G'day guys, i have been doing alot of surfcasting and rockfishing in my hometown of oamaru and was just wanting advice on Fin-nor 9500 offshore reels. are they any good? or would i be better of with a penn?

Any help or advice would be great !

They're grunty reels with very good drag for what they cost but they are also incredibly agricultural by modern standards. No instant anti-reverse and tripping the bail by smashing it into the stem is pretty 1980s stuff.

Around that price-point I'd have a look at the bigger Daiwa BG, Shimano Socorro, or Penn Spinfisher.

BA (past member here) targeted and caught a marlin with one. I have one as a Topwater casting set should I happen upon a marlin or such workup.

Solid reels, but as BotStomper said quite old tech compared to modern reels.  The disadvantage they have is weight, they weigh about twice as much as a more high-tech reels for the same performance.  I found it an issue on a top water set, but that might not matter for surfcasting.

Maybe look at a baitrunner / baitfeeder type reel. There’s lots of options around. I use an Okuma avenger 8000 had no problems with it.
