Hey guys, been fishing for a while now and got sick of cutting my finger on braid during botched casts lol, so I gave the casting aid / casting cannon a try.

For some reason it ripped my 15lbs braid when I cast? To be fair I did put some power into it but it really confused me because the braid was fresh.

I looped it around 3 times based on what I’ve read here, went to cast and let go like I normally do, heard my braid rip and my sinker went for a flight to the South Island.

Any ideas? Did I put too much power into it? Was 3 loops too much for 15lbs? I would have done some testing but I got annoyed and took the casting aid off so I could fish normally lmao.

Cheers

15lb braid is no good for surfcasting without a shock leader. The old rule was 10lb of (mono) line for every 1oz of sinker.

Sorry forgot to mention I had a shock leader as well, it’s normally fine if I use my finger it never rips, was shocked when it ripped with the casting aid though

I see, I'm not familiar with the device, maybe drop a line to Breakaway. They seem like a pretty responsive company.

maybe try putting a fabric plaster over your finger that should stop the braid cutting your finger when u cast.  Smile

1. Make sure the metal part of the cannon is completely smooth.  There may have been a manufacturing fault.
2. Only use one wrap of the line round it so that it just holds.  there is a lot of recommendation of using 2 but that can delay a release.
3. You say you use a shock leader?  The mono shock  leader should long enough to still have a couple of wraps around the reel when casting (2-3 times the length of the rod). If this was the case the braid wouldn't be used on the cannon.

I don't really like those casting triggers I just feel more comfortable casting the old-fashioned way.

My 1st day surfcasting ended early because of the raw fingertip  so I gets me a cannon .......which took a bit more "learnin " than expected
I found that the position of the cannon  should be  pretty much adjacent to the spool , to far up the rod  dont work .
The other thing I learnt was that  the amount of oomph  one puts into the cast  verses the distance the rig flies is one of them diminishing return things , and by putting in half the effort the rig will go 3/4 the same distance without degloving your finger and anyhow  most of the fish are not that far off shore.
Im fairly new to surfcasting   but I have 50lb braid and 2 rod lengths of  30lb fluro , and I did find the cannon needs a bit of practice and I aint sure (yet )  if Im going to keep using it . If you really need the distance its probly worth persevering  Smile
Check out some vids of  long distance casting competitions ..... these guys make it look easy .

The FG knot is the best here because of its ultra low profile which flows through the rings better then other knots. This method of tying it is the best I have found:

Similar to what I do. I tie a loop in the braid and load up the rod a little. Best braid to mono knot ever IMO

I did the same Smudge  but I found that  a whole rod length of main line was a bit hard  ,......so I gets the Temu FG knotter , works good .  I seen some smartarse on TV doin it with just his fingers LOL.
You only need enough tension on the main line  just to hold the wraps in place while you wind the knot up ,  otherwise the knot gets a bit lumpy , doesnt seem to affect the strength ( never had one come undone )   just dont look so good , have a butchers at a finished knot  with a magnifying glass.......the whole plot becomes a bit clearer when you see how  the finished knot wraps the main line around the leaderSmile
