Its been pretty quiet on the forums so I would like to just say how sad I am that rod and reel has closed. I have spent many a happy time there. Not sure where I am going to get my gear now.

One thing is I think we should keep the saltwater fly alive and would be keen to organise some get togethers on the water and possibly even a catch up somewhere for drink etc.

Any thoughts?

I heard about the closure. I don't get into Auckland city during 'business hours' and have never been there but always wanted to visit. Was it at the old 'Just Fishin' location? From memory that was in Teed St Newmarket.Very sad that it has closed as it had a great reputation..

A sad reality of life in the digital world unfortunately. Specialist stores can really only survive online. I don't mind. I can order whatever I want from the couch and have it arrive at my door two days later. And social media gives me all the fishing interaction and advice I could ever need.

There is perhaps a need for casting days and tackle expos where we get to physically play with tackle, but after that it is back to ordering online.

A small specialist fly fishing store in an expensive retail environment doesn't really have a hope-in-hell of surviving.

Marine Deals have been increasing their fly fishing stock and also have a range of Diamondback rods (Joe Goodspeed ex T&T rod designer) , as well as his ideal nymph rods they have a few of his saltwater rods.
My local shop now R and R have gone.

Very surprised to see Sage Flagship (R8 Core) models there. (Speaking of which, the Sage Salt R8 was officially released yesterday to much marketing fanfare).

last time I was in there they did notice I was getting saltwater fly-fishing supplies and advised they have a guy there who is into it and to pick him out and let him know what we want I forgot his name. Didnt get time on that trip but hope they do make the supplies accessible as you know you kind of want to feel it see it when you are making stuff that is not really on the shelf.

I don't think this has much to do with the "digital world" Craig. More to do with the fact it moved away from being a "small specialist store" and started to look more like a typical "Hunting and Fishing" store. That is starting to sound more like poor management.

I'm thinking bait sales were likely the only thing keeping it partially afloat in the end. I think they even sold monofilament gill nets which is about as alien to fly fishing as you will get.

Their online presence (in terms of the "digital world" analogy") was abysmal.

That is more like what happened there.

You may well be right. I have never been to the store and I regret not making the effort but I never got a spare day. Maybe they felt the need to diversify to survive? Having never owned a business I really don't understand some of the difficulties but I can imagine how hard it must be when things start going downhill.

The only reason the store closed was that the owner died in early 2022.

They tried to sell it as a going concern but due to issues around continuing with the lease of the premises this wasn’t possible.
As a result they closed down.

Comments re not being a specialist store couldn’t be more wrong. Expansion into saltwater fishing etc was a natural progression, much the same as the old Just Fishing shop when that was in Newmarket.

Only went in there a couple of times, but it was a good store. These kind of stores like Hunts on the shore are great if you’re looking for something not mainstream.

Most of the big name stores just only carry what’s in fashion at the moment. I get a lot of my stuff from sites like Kaveman Tackle and the likes nowadays.
