A well known kayak fisho used a legal size kingfish for livebait when targeting marlin. Only in NZ!

I have read that marlin are capable of devouring a fish up to 1/3rd of their own body weight.  That puts any sub 30kg kingfish, or other fish, on the menu of a 100kg marlin.

In my kayak a few years ago, great fishing up in a harbour. Landed a well legal kingfish, just as I placed him back in the water a monster kingy smashed him. Unreal.   It was HUGE.

I had a marlin attack a large Y/F right under my boat - about 5 m below. The Y/F was around 35-40kg.
Have a pic of it. Had a big bill slash down one side.

can you post here that pick Alan L?

While lines down 25m deep snapper fishing off raglan a boil up of skippy started right around the boat. Maybe 50, we all hung over the side and we could have scooped them. They weren’t feeding but freaking out then in a flash they were gone and a well over 100kg stripe marlin was swirling under us all lit up It was amazing to view and be part of.

Large kings gulping legal size Kingi would be a sight to behold

This is the fish. The marlin was clearly keen to eat it.
Unfortunately I got mate to flip it around to good side. May have made a better pic with the bill rash. Had a slash along one side.
The fish immediately gave up the fight and hid under the edge of the boat. Easiest Y/F gaffing job to date.
