A few months ago we were in Taupo looking for something different to do with the kids. We discovered the Tongariro National Trout Centre which was awesome. Beautiful surrounds, gorgeous place to stop and have a wander, stretch your legs or a picnic (heaps of parking too!) but the best part was the trout fishing for the kids. We didn't need to book, walked straight in and wandered down to the lake where an instructor took over showing the kids how to fly fish. We were pretty lucky that it didn't take long before the first trout was caught. They were taught the basics of fly fishing, guaranteed a catch (nice little 1kg trout each) and for a little extra the staff cleaned and gutted them before smoking the fish so we could take it home for tea. Totally stoked with that little added bonus as we didn't have a kitchen where we were staying. Highly recommend taking the kids there. We'll be back!
