you should have the basic base map...next to useless
lowrance can come with Cmap or navionics maps
Cmap havnt looked at for couple yrs now, it was little more than the general LINTZ map
Navionics silver the same
 Gold, not sure about
Platinum is like this.. zoom in have a play.. and it has updates every few days

Depending on where you fish, you may find the free C-map genesis charts provide coverage that is adequate for your area.  I used these in my lowrance HDI unit on the kayak for the rotorua lakes

look at the social map for the area and see if there is coverage relevant for where you fish.  Note, best to get to this site via chrome or firefox as the charts don't show up for internet explorer.

If the charts on the social map are going to work for you then you will need to suscribe (free) and work through the process of downloading the charts for your area.

CMAP has been brought by Navico (SIMRAD, Lowrance, B&G) and is going through a tranformation with them adding in all their bottom mapping they have been getting from the Insight Genesis so watch this space for CMAP, big things ahead.

On the other side of the fence Navionics has been brought by Garmin and they are doing the same thing.

Looks like all the big names not only need the GPS / sonar hardware but also sonar mapping capabilities as well.

There is never a better time to go fishing than now, live the day

Thanks for the replies, really helpful

I will start with the freebie c-maps, thanks for the link
My main areas for fishing in my yak is around inner waitemata to rangi light, also around cornwallis on the manukau, the later only 15mins drive from home

Probably at some stage I might end up getting navionics, but not too sure which would be compatible for my unit, either gold or platinum
At the moment, my low & slow bbq fetish is chewing up spare $$$

Would navionics merge saved waypoints into its maps
When I bought my 2nd hand kayak, it came with the f/f gps unit & 100+ waypoints on it
For viewing & planing at home, can these waypoints be viewed on a marine map on your laptop

cheers

Could try a PC software called Easygps. I have used it to save waypoints and transfer  to another gps unit.

I checked out c-maps, the freebie was very limiting for the areas that I wanted to view

Ended up purchasing navionics + , the updated version of the gold card, which now does community edits & sonar charts, to me, its money well spent
My Elite 7HDI came without any maps, so at least now, I am able to see the drop offs & contours of the bottom etc

What software do you guys use to view your saved way points & navionics together on a pc.

If your lowarnce hooks up to yopur local wireless network.. I think it would be the same as my smart tab/ navionics and smart phone .. both running navionics.
If logged in on both then they syn tracks markers settings and stuff.
But even when logged in on the navionics web page link it tells you that these are only for the navionics apps.
 Beyond that I dont know

I saying that I do get the occasional email about  ypou can now do this and that  and Im sure one of them mentions how to transfer tracks , markers etc.
Go to the navionics web site  have a dig around  for how tos..

I’m not sure if this would work well on a kayak.......but when our chart plotter recently died I went and bought a cheap tablet ($140) that had gps built in- that means you don’t need SIM card or wifi, mobile data etc. I loaded navionics on it - I think it’s about $30? Bought a protective case and we’re good. Love it
