Was talking to a mate this morning about second hand boat values. Hes being looking for a good late model alloy boat with 4 stroke. Seems to him that sellers are after new prices for a 3-4 year old boats. How much roughly do boats devalue each year?

I think -
- second hand boats depreciate about 5% a year eg a boat costing $30,000 would depreciate about $1500 a year.
- but I also think the market value follows new prices upwards as well. eg I reckon prices for my Stabi 1530, have gone up due to new Stabi prices. So, I would estimate that its 5% depreciation below the current new price, not necessarily what you paid for it.

It seems very odd that depreciation is so low compared to vehicles; but cant beat the market.

I agree with letsgetem.
Some makes hold their value better than others, Stabi and Surtees for example.
Labour costs will keep increasing, minimum wage is heading up too. Land values are way up , so are rents for premises to build boats. Generally overheads would be hard to fix, so new prices keep rising resulting in less depreciation on purchase price. Certainly better than cars.

I found exactly that, so I bought a new boat instead of S/H.

Letsgetem has it right. The rising costs of new boats offsets some of the depreciation. We recently sold a bunch of our 6m & 6.5m boats that we bought new in 2001. So 16 years old doing charter work. Average depreciation was less than 3% per annum, BUT we spent plenty on maintenance including the cosmetics (upholstery, covers etc). In reality the depreciation is driven as much by the maintenance you do as it is by the age. Keep the boat looking pristine and depreciation can be pretty low. Let the boat age badly and depreciation will be a lot more.
3 to 4 year old boats will mostly still look much like new with even basic maintenance and are likely still current models so if the new list prices have gone up then so will the used price so unlike most things you may get to sell your 3 - 4 year old boat without taking a huge first owner hit.
The other variable is whether there is stock siting around of the model you want of whether it has to be ordered and go onto the build list that might take months. Lack of stock on the market pushes up used prices.
If I wanted a certain model and was looking at new boats I would go to a dealer that doesn't have one on his yard and negotiate a payment plan alongside the price. If your payments fully cover the dealers payments to the manufacturers (hull, engine, electronics etc) and the boat only sits in his yard for a week or so to get rigged, then if you are smart about it you should be able to get a pretty good deal.

My 1st boat , 5.2m fleetline with a 105 Chrylsar brought about 2yrs old around '74.. From memory the new version was about 3K more.
 Sold that 78 for $4500..
I rem the commander was maybe a couple k more new.
A good  well look after commander and late model engine... the last 80s model, not the older squarish window model 6/7yr ago went for (not asking price) 10 to 12K  and still will do the same today.

Depredation .. boats.. not business , just rec...its about maintenance.. good maintenance, looking after upholstery,, keeping trailer clean serviced...or in other works always pushing back and holding  deterioration for a very unforgiving salt water environment... and that costs time and materials..
Do that and after 5/10 yrs you will get back close to what you put in.
Dont do it.. a $42 K 5.5 m well powered boat/ engine will  drop to 28K very easy in 2 to 3 yrs... and be very difficult to move.

Its no different to  most other items.
look after it cool.. take it for granted, pay the price..

Why I like buying privately as get to see used boat in "as is" condition when buying used from a dealer has usually been tarted up and you pay for it.
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.
