Fished Waihau Bay Saturday and Sunday, fishing pretty quiet but we were lucky enough to snag a 24 kg YFT, Karin's first so she was wrapped to tick that off her bucket list. We also tagged a Mako that was no more than 3 kg, smallest I have ever seen. With about 40 boats fishing the Greater Waihau Bay area we only heard of 3 YFT on Saturday and no sign of Marlin. Sunday was even worse didn't hear of any landed fish but a mate dropped a little stripey.

Water temp was 23 in the morning and rising to 24.9 late in day due to solar heating, a mate got 26 at one place late in the day. Heaps of workups with gannets and Dolphins but no tuna in them, we got our tuna out deeper away from the workups.

Sea not too bad today, better than we thought it was gonna be and very fishable, we tagged a stripey early afternoon. Talked to Christine at the club, 3 stripeys tagged, 1 blue weighed and about 5 shortbill caught for the day.
We actually caught skippies pretty easy this morning, in close in about 80-100m, haven’t seen a work up in the 3 days we’ve fished though.

One of the Shortbills...  - Also, second that skippies comment above - we've had no probs getting them early - off Orete, but trying to find something to feed them to is another story!

Looks like a few SBT are now on the bite, Redgill lures seem to be getting the big ones. 100kg fish came in,
Unfortunately Facebook takes over with the most up to date info, These forums were awesome when used by everyone,
I thought fishing.net was working on an mobile phone app?

The site is fully functional on mobile Tony.

Waihau Bay will be busy this weekend - every man and his barking thing heading that way.  Few people heading out of Whakatane which sounds like an good option

We are heading out of Whakatane on Saturday for the 2 1/2 hour boat ride to the tuna grounds. There were 97 boats fishing out of Waihau Bay today, but I have only heard about 2 fish caught by lunch time. I was told that there was a 3 hour wait to launch.

I've been working down Whakatane ways this week and there has been a steady stream of large trailer boats heading east, lots of them. Not hard to guess what their doing.
Top 10 finish

Lot of boats out today at Waihau Bay, if you had a piece of land for parking for a fee one could do alright.

I just watched a doco with a tough old bloke diving into the deep scattering plankton layer in the middle of the night. He had to give up during the Full Moon. The light from the moon was too strong and was keeping the plankton layer below fifty metres. Given that this is where bluefin are feeding at nights it stands to reason that the fish are going to be deep and will stay deep during this period. Trolling lures barely scratch the surface.
