Ive found many a beautiful boat at a good price with the most dorky names known to man, simple rename them.

I think the whole renaming superstition is a bit like the urban legend that snapper cant be caught on snapper, which is total bollox.

Anyone else renamed a boat or 2?

no, because i haven't owned a boat yet, just kayaks and a jet ski, but i wouldn't hesitate to rename one. it's like the banana thing, a bit of fun, but really? what a load of old bollocks.

No, of course not. Superstitions are inherently stupid. There is no scientific and logical reason to them. They belong to an age when things couldn't be explained through  empirical examinations. Banana on a boat will restrict your catch rate? Changing a boat name will make fish think twice before biting? Black cat = bad luck? Mirror smashing is bad luck? How? In what world would these things have actual lived implications upon one's life. Maybe a bit of fun, but I would be troubled to find that someone actually believed such things.

Never ever had this problem.
So long as the appropriate renaming ceremony is held.
Here are some possibilities for you;

They all will provide good reading for you. Plus provide you with endless possibilities.
I remember in my sailing days, the skipper turned up and said the boat has a new name - it incorporated the name of the sponsor and would appear on the new spinnaker.
No ceremony, get on with the sailing boys......the sponsors money took all the risks out of it real quick.

Its all bit of fun most of these superstitions..  various ceremonies available for renaming things appropriately with a bit of a laugh, involving weeing in the bilges etc etc...


or just rename it :)  

Hated my current boat name when bought it, but has grown on me and won't change it now.

Its all bit of fun most of these superstitions..  various ceremonies available for renaming things appropriately with a bit of a laugh, involving weeing in the bilges etc etc...

 Pretty well sums it all up..

Tradition/ superstition, what ever one wants to call it, we followed was sold the name..for a $ and then regist new name at the boat club, Coast guard /VHF etc...and new signs a few name decals on the side later

As a sign writer I can assure you nothing adverse will happen to you if you change your boat name. To the contrary, you will in fact be likely blessed with great fortune.
In fact it should be compulsory to change your boat name at least 4 times every year!!

I consider myself in no way to be superstitious, to the slightest degree.
Nevertheless see no need to tempt fate, so bananas on my boat are not welcome when going fishing.
 
Go figure ... however suspect there are others reluctant to admit doing likewise!

Make the new name, rip the old one off, put the new one on, go Fishing!

You have to go fishing within a week of doing it, other wise you're gonna get fishing withdrawal symptoms which are really bad juju!

Was a very strong superstition / tradition when I started offshore sailing in Keelers, partly I presume as quite a few of the skippers and crew were ex navy.
there were certain rituals they had, also the same applied to stepping a mast or re stepping one, always had to have a gold coin underneath when stepped.

Probably all bull**** but was part of the era, and the mystique of sailing. Mind you the first Large yacht I crewed, sailed on, was built in 1897 and was gaff rigged and all manila ropes with blocks and belaying pins rather than winches. You earned a beer after a days sailing.

always had to have a gold coin underneath when stepped.
 That is why we sold the old name of our boat for a dollar.. a dollar 'gold coin'
