Hi All - first post from a mad keen fisherman keen for some advice/views.
My old man and I head away once a year for an extended weekend 3-4 days full on fishing he's based in Dunedin and I am based in Kapiti. Last year we went to Waiheke and got into some land based snapper. I've since purchased a 3.5m dingy with a 30hp Yamaha on the back and am trying to work out where to go this year. I would have loved to have headed back to Waiheke but it's too far to tow the boat so have been considering options a bit closer including Nelson/Tasman bay, coromandel, Napier or New Plymouth. Ideally wouldn't be driving more than 6 hours each way from Kapiti and need a location where no matter (where possible!) the weather there is an opportunity to get out and catch some fish. Targeted species ideally would be snapper and kingfish. We would be planning the wkd prob in March some time. Any advice based on recommendations on location would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

Really depends on weather and forecast - that time of year should be able to stay in motor camp no problems if not Easter week?  One thought is to plan East/West Coast if Westerlies forecast go East etc - and check a few possible camp/cabin sites first to see how bookings look at planned time?
6 hrs from Kapiti means West Coast up to Taranaki as Kawhia Raglan harbours a bit far I would guess? - so not harbours but beach launch unless Taranaki?  Do you have 4WD?  Plenty Snapper Mokau way but beach launch - Snappa Geoff would give you local knowledge PM him he has Mac 360 boat?
East Coast  suppose up to Napier Hastings way but don't know area well?
Just my thoughts - good luck!
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Thanks MacSkipper much appreciated - yeah I know re: weather, will have to take a punt somewhat my dad will need to fly from Dunedin to the closet airport so will need to make a call with some notice to book flights etc. I thought about new plym/naki but a bit concerned about exposure to weather (similar here in Kapiti). Beach launch is fine I do that here in Kapiti (if swell allows) have a 2wd CX9 but have a smartwave hull which is pretty light and easy to launch and retrieve if sand isn't too soft! I have potentially free accom through friends at matarangi or kaiteriteri so they are options was also thinking Tauranga harbour as an option.

From what you are saying and with Dad needing to book flights in advance - decide on area and post in fishing reports for that area and hook up (excuse the pun) with a local with local knowledge - someone here will be able to offer advice for boat and land based if windy.  As I think you know local knowledge makes all the difference - from location, tides and when to fish, to rigs and baits best to use so you and Dad can have a great time!  Cheers.

Hi Tim, Tauranga? Plenty of accessible spots that aren't so weather dependent. March is peak season here and not alot of effort required to get a bin of snapper, trevally, ky or kingfish. Also not far to do a day trip up to Coro. If you are interested I can accommodate aswell. Two bed sleepout available.
Cheers Craig.

Many thanks Kitno - yeah I was definitely considering Tauranga as a strong option, but wasn't sure whether within the harbour fished well enough? Sounds like if all of the above could be targeted in the harbour it would be a very good option, is that the case? Cheers

There are more than enough fish of quality size and condition within the harbour during March. Have a read through the Tauranga reports and you will get to build a picture. I would be more than happy to mark some spots on a map for you or meet up out on the water. With two harbour entrances at opposite ends, there no need to fish in wind against tide scenarios. Not uncommon to hear of 20kg + kingfish getting caught.
