There is a lot of doom and gloom on this part of the forum, so I have to remind myself that I come back with a good feed from nearly every trip!

Having said that, I do care about the marine environment and fish stocks. I'm a paying member of LegaSea, they may not be perfect, but I think they are our best chance of being heard. What else can we do? I'm not a massive believer in social media campaigns and petitions, but sign up when they come along. I could give more money to LegaSea and hope they spend it wisely. What else?

Try developing a line of cumminications with your local MP, and encourage others to do the same. That way you can keep fishing in their mind so if any discussions on the subject are had, then they might think, "hmmmm, the Mighty Boosh may not like this..." or something.
Other than that....not a lot really.
Oh, and when I say develop a relationship, I don't mean sending them a string of shouty, preachy emails, lol, but nice friendly polite discussion type questions etc. No tinfoil hat stuff if ya know what I mean.....

MightyB  Good question. I hope you get some good replies.

CA is right. My first thought was to talk to your local MP about why fishing is important to you and others. You could send them a copy of our resent economic report Recreational Fishing in NZ - A Billion Dollar Industry.  The main point is that recreational fishing supports an industry in its own right. Management decisions don't just affect commercial fishers but affect small businesses and jobs in that service recreational fisheries in your electorate.
The foundation is still raising money to pay for this report. Give a little and you will know Exactly where your money is going. Also tax deductible.

The same with local government elections about to start. There are issues of sedimentation and pollution from land runoff, urban and rural. This affects swimmers, kayakers, etc as well as fish habitats.  Are the local boat ramps, wharfs and infrastructure for fishers adequate or safe? What will counsellors do about it?

I hadn't thought of local body politicians, but that is not silly either, as it is these folks who control the local environmental controls, resource applications etc. not much help on national levels but certainly a very good way of influencing local issues.
