have heard this is a good spot to jig for kings but on Thursday we jigged for a couple of hours and not get one rat, so was interested to know are there any specific area around this island that generally holds the fish or any time of year this island fish's better?
We just drove around the island found some thick sign on the eastern side but couldn't get any takers any advice would be good thanksSmile

it has its moments like any place,
there are a lot of other places on the chart not to far from Channel which can produce on the day also,
but yes they need to be on the chew otherwise a lot of effort for no gain,
be resilient and have options at hand like lives and even big softies or even whole squid drifted down with a weight on the mantel end so it looks like it alive and swimming,

Kings have a habit of chasing the bait as it gets near slack tide as well, the reason is the bait has to swap ends of the island and while they do they are fair game for kings, keep that in mind next time and try arriving there about an hour before high or low tide so you have a better chance of nailing a few.

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

Have been there to chase kings and ended up with solid as snapper instead. Like any place it can be hot and cold depending on how the bait is grouping or not

I was out on Thursday as well. Was thinking of heading out there but found literally 1000's of kingfish closer in the hauraki instead. Caught about 40 rats no keepers. They were on the bite just no in that spot

Yeah Channel seems to run more cold than hot these days, sees a lot more pressure now as guys are more willing to do the miles for fish. Not uncommon even on weekdays to encounter 3 or 4 other boats out there on a half decent day, as with any fishery it does decline as it becomes more accessible and popular.

We used to average 20+ fish a day out there on jigs a few years back but it seems to get progressively harder each season. Still have the odd trip when it fires and you get a few on jigs but most of our fish from there are taken on livies now. If we want to target kings, we either make a trip somewhere further north or just stick to the shallows a lot closer to home now.

..and Thursday was Full Moon  Wacko  , so a 50:50 call at best if they would bite IMHO. But yes it's a funny place, hot or cold as they say.

tried jigs Sat morn on full tide with no success, patches of sign all over. Agree on the full moon thing, but was in the Bounty Hunter so tried anyway. There were heaps of seals out there also.

Hard fishing during the bounty hunter, the normally abundant kahawai at channel were noticeably absent also.

Love fishing, love my job. It's a bloody shame that they clash.
