I currently have a bx400xn spooled with 300m of pe4 and was planning on getting a reel with pe6 for heavier jigging, livebaiting and as a puka reel
Is there much difference between the pe5n and the pe5 to go one way or the other. Figuring pe6 line is heaps considering the new Shimano ocea line is claiming 100lb. Better to go narrower so easier to jig with or go the pe5 for extra capacity
Thoughts?

easier to jig mate go the N... even if you jig in 150M if you get another 150 stripped of the reel you are not going to stop it with a bit more
 
Just the ease with the narrow.... will become your goto reel for sure....

PE5 is not wide,  that is what i have and also have no problems jigging with a OJ5000P either( that is what thumbs are for)LOL

I have a 5n, my mate has a 5. I have done plenty of jigging with both, and don't have any trouble with the 5 bunching, but I prefer the 5n because im used to it I guess

yep i got a 5n ,lovely little reel. 380mtrs of pe5 / 65lb for waters round round home, then i put 300-330mtrs pe6/80lb on ranfurly and kings trips as a back up for my pe7 loaded with pe8

Hi FA, dont know what depth your planing on fishing, but i run a PE5N and have the new jigstar katana braid on it as it is smaller diameter than most. I'm running 76lb on that have plenty of capacity using for grouper in 150-200M+ including drift and fight lengths.  Prefer the narrow spool myself for jigging, however as Kaveman said, a pe5 is not that wide either.

PE5N all day brother. Even though the PE5 is not wide at all... after using the the narrow it now feels like the PE5 is some what errrr gapping wide open!!!

PE5N is a very nice reel especially the HG model, like most reels the smaller the better

I have the pe6 and 5000P and have no trouble jigging with either.........the extra capacity is always useful........with the N .......if you get bust off in that 150 metres .......you might find your self with not much line left on your reel.........they are both nice reels.....light too(at least the Jm is but i enjoy the workout from the 5000P and it has one of the smoothest drags going with cals plate/carbontex).
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

Thanks guys for all the responses. It looks like pe5n is the preference. This is my heavier reel so just wanted to make sure it would have enough capacity to attempt a puka one day(never caught one to know how much line I need)
Most of my kingy jigging is 140m and under to capacity of the pe5n is sweet for the kings
Rob: now you have got the head going with the high gear model. Anyone else tried it or would like a faster ratio?

If you want to use it as a puka reel go for the extra capacity IMO. Depending on where you fish you will prob want 400m. I like the 1:4 ratio for deep/big weights

Buy the pe5n for its most use, which is kingies and then borrow or hire when actually targeting puka and you can still take the pe5n out on those trips for a try after you respool with a preferred line, but dont buy the pe5 for a "just in case" I might chase puka one day, or it may end up sold for something else, as a lot of us find out after we buy and dont use all the time Tongue I have sold a lot of bigger puka / kingy stuff and have mostly snapper and medium kingie gear left that I use more often.

Yeah mate used the JM PE3 in the new high ratio of 5.3:1 (or could be 5.1:1, cant remember). Really nice on those super light rods mate. Def prefer the higher ratio on the smaller stuff as with the low ratio reels on light gear with large strokes you tend to get alot of "dead Jigging" where you find there is no weight until the last 10 percent of the lift. The higher ratio clears this out no problem. Also find its not an overkill ratio where it destroys you. Also gaining line back with the new ratio is still relatively easy.

Can't comment on the PE5 size in high ratio.

I would definitely go high ratio for small reels. Think the retrieve is about 32/33 inches crank for bx400xn. I think standard pe5n/pe5 is 30 so close enough. I do find the first 4 turns in 100+m is slightly slow timing as the low retrieve per crank. Fine after that . did some basic calculations and the bx500xn is 36 inch crank vs pe5 high speed 40 inch crank
Anyone tried the standard pe5 and high speed pe5?

I reckon its the most universal size of any jigging reel.. gonna stop most things except maybe a behemoth king bank bass or a mutant jurassic park hoodlum..  and you can put some semi silly string on them with a 150-250 grm rod and have some fun or mate to a 300-350 grm stick and give it shiite. good allrounder imo

Really like the high speed jigging reels, got a 600NN with 6:1 ratio as well and just suits me, not everyone's cup of tea though as you do work a lot harder both jigging and when you're hooked up.
Matched with the right rods you seem to be in contact with the jig a lot longer
Have got std PE 5N as well and prefer the HG model

Reel speed is all about the relative length of your natural stroke. I tried a hg pe5n but it didn't suit me so have gone back to a standard model.. The hg will not be the best choice if you do use it for Puka when you will need the low gear grunt of the standard model to gain line back easily
Buy a pe5n and just ring me to borrow a pe8 when you need to go deep
