I have been asked to submit this response to jimi's dig at rick by rick himself.
Answer to jimi the fish
While this has taken me some time to respond to, ive only recently been made aware of jimi's statements regarding myself and a trip he was on in mid january. Rather than belabour his statement as a whole,ill just make a few bullet points;
1) To maximise on his groups fishing time we left 2 hours earlier than normal on this day trip.
2) I offered to go out overnight (at no extra cost) to give them more fishing time - offer declined. These are hardly the type of things one who "didnt care" would do!!
3) I never stay away from prefered spots saving them for prefered groups. We fished a number of the best spots on the day in question, 2 of them twice.
4) There was absolutley no current on this day, normally the kiss of death for kingi fishing.
5) Upon booking this trip, i told the organiser that typically this could be a difficult time for kingis on jigs, as the fish finish spawning they lose a lot of agression which make them such great jig adversaries normally.
6) Unfortunatly the only place which held any quality fish on this day was the volkner rocks. Also unfortunatly it was and still is loaded with swarms of hungry bronze whalers. While i dont mind killing fish, there is only one place for them - on the deck. i will not sacrifice beautiful kingfish for jimi or anyone else to sharks- time to move elsewhere.
7) Yes i am a live bait freak,a dead bait freak, a lure freak, a jig freak- anything that will catch fish is what im into at the time. ive been actively jigging since i was 15 and brought with me many kilos of jigs to New Zealand when i moved here from California 30 yers ago. An advocate of jig fishing? you couldnt find a more supportive or positive one!!
8) Despite a hard trip which was conducted in perfect conditions but a disappointment for us all most participants thanked the crew and shook or hands prior to departing the Whakatane wharf, including jimi. A cheap shot to come out with some of these allegations after shaking a mans hand.
I could trump up a few more but will leave it there, only wishing jimi the best of luck at Kapiti or anywhere else he chooses to fish
