Hey guys having a  weekend away with the family staying up in Whitianga in a motel next to buffalo beach never been there before but I have been told by the mrs she would like a snapper for dinner :) Any hints or tips people? Worth a shot?

As a kid we used to fish the sand bank thats to the left of the wharf. Used to get the odd snapper but KY more prevalent - plenty of current through there. When the marina was first built we used to go off the rocks at the end there with some success.
 
Used catch JD and snapper off the wharf itself too.
 
I went back a few years ago now and all that was around were parorae (ie not porae), (was during january though).
 
There are ledges around, best bet IMO would be check out the marine charts as per usual.

Iv only fished by boat, but close in all the same, but if you go to the next bay around, wharekaho i think, and onto the rocks at the northern end, you should get into the snapper. Or else surfcast at night.

What motel?  If it is the Beachfront Resort, I was brought up in this motel and we used to have a lot of luck directly out from it.  Anywhere from the motel south to Mother Browns creek entrance.  The beach has changed a lot since I lived there but it sounds like there are still some good catches to be made.  Incoming to high tide at dusk is the best and firm baits to counter the crabs.

Davies Pt which is the southern point of Simpsons Beach (Wharekaho) can be good during the day at low / incoming.  Very rocky terrain so don't bother with sinkers. Walk around until just past the tip of the point and cast out aiming in the direction of Shakespeare Cliff.

We used to stay at the Beachfront resort aswell and caght a few snapper off beach later on in the afternoon too but more kahawai then anything. if you do stay there however you have free access to kayaks. if your not staying there there is a walkway next to the resort if you dont want to be to far from your car.
 
we will be heading up to Whitianga in the next few weeks again. Anyone willing to share some info on where we could go to have a go at some kingis from the rocks? dont mind driving or walking

There are birds galore working the entire length of Buffalo beach right now. A couple of guys are having a ball wading almost into the middle of them and hauling out some reasonable KY.
QS. I havent tried it myself yet as more into boat fishing, but I am told on good authority that the big flat ledge on the inside (pink beach? ) end of Opito produces some good kingis. Think it called Opito point, just behind Rabbit island. Probably a twenty minute walk from the reserve at the end of the road.

Go to opito bay we use to walk to the right facing the water and walk around the old Par there is a little island there we use to X on the low tide and fish it through the high and get some good Kings there!
Also we use to scammper across the land to the right before going around the par, comes out to a little bay and we use to go to the right hand side up over the kliffs there's some mean terrain there for kings!I have also seen a few people go to the left hand side of opito bay but never ventured there my self but looked mean once going past it in a boat!!!!!

Hey Keep on Fishing,
 
Grab you surf caster, some squid and bonito head to the wharf approaching low tide watch the sand bank to the left appear, walk out get fresh tuatuas straight at your feet, fish the out going tide in the channel and move back in with the tide, you should pull a few snapps in if not get your limit... take your rod holder and a bucket and make sure you have sand spike sinkers...
 
Good luck mate, great spot and the wife and kids can watch from the beach.

The bar there always changes,  if you have waders you may be able to walk it at high, I never tried, we always went at low, some years depending on the bar shape you would barely even get your feet wet walking across (its not far). As said best bet is on the outgoing as there is a bit of current there, and incoming will see you fishing round the corner of the wharf piles unless you have decent lead.

Lots of places to land base here QS ,put the missus and kids in the car head over the hill to Kuoatunu then turn right to Opito ,Otama and Matapaua bays take your pick .The rocks at the right hand end of Otama extending round to Sarahs Gully fish well and are easy walking ,as said previously the right hand end of Opito Bay ,walk to end of beach then up and over to the outside there are lots of spots ,Left hand end of matapaua bay or walk to right hand end climb steps to top of ridge then follow track ,any where from there to Sandy bay will fish well 
Back here in town as above Davis point accessed from Simpsons beach (easy walk ) the wharf ,the Pipi beds to left of wharf ,the two groynes forming the Marina all easily fished .Take a walk round Robinson Rd past Lovers rock to the Waterways entrance at night with a spear and a light for flounder  Giving way to much info here you will all want to come and live in paradice with the lucky ones LOL

I fished the estuary thenn the following day took my dingy over to a rock the little island over from the wharf pulled up on there then just hammered the snapper
