Just a quick one, are these any good? Will i need a drag upgrade for jigging? I already have and use a trynos 30 II for jigging but find it a bit heavy so would use it for puka instead
One on trade me for $250, is it worth the money or should i be saving up for something better?

hey brendon

these reels are fine i use a torium and its been great so far havent upgraded the drag yet and have landed fish up to 40ish pound with no worries but if u got a wide wallet i would get a 4000p ! 

what rod are you using??

I have used both the torium 30 and trinidad 30 extensively for jigging. Both are great reels and more than adequate for average kings....but.... if you are serious about targeting fish over 40lb IMO they are not ideal, especially in water less than 40m. The torium's especially seem to blow the ARB bearings very quickly when using 80lb braid  on big fish, and both struggle to give you the drag to pull the bigger boys from the reef in shallower water. 
 
Have retired these reels to big snap fishing and gone the 4000P and JM way, the extra dollars is money very, very well spent if you fish big fish waters and are likely to tangle with the big boys! ....and a lot more fun!!!

I had a Torium 30 for several years and have caught many KINGIs up to 40lbs.
Providing they are service correctly you shouldnt have any major problems, the one on Trade Me sounds quite reasonable for $250 with braid. Considering a new one with braid is going to cost somewhere over $400.

Agree with other boys Deacs, torium at 6.2:1, too fast for mechanical jigging and a pain in the arse when retrieving line when hooked up to a green freight train.

Totally agree if everyone in ideal world you start out with the best, unfortunately 99.9% of us are not in that position. I started with Torium 30 but now have a JM400 + 4000p that a significant increase in capital expediture, certainly dont have any regrets about.

My first jigging reel (after TLD30) was a Torium 30. Handled average kingis alright, even landed a 124kg bronzie. After one good trip melted the drag washers, ended up a black stain on the drag plates. As Kaveman said it has the high ratio which can get tiring, also small handle. Have OJ4000P and OJ5000P now and they are awesome, torium has been retired to lighter line. Would say keep jigging the Tyrnos until you can save up for a Jigger.

If cost is an issue have a look at Daiwa Saltist  a similar price  to the one on trademe you were looking at give or take.

Cheers for the comments guys may leave it alone, how much are the 4000ps?
Can use the Trynos on the smaller school fish as not much jigging is usually involved before hook up!

I wouldnt bother about a saltist 4.2 ratio Narrow spool. i bought 1 and added it to a TC 200 and caught some impressive fish back in November upto 24kg but if i had carried on doing that it would be dead by now .Its what i use for xos Turkey hunting in water upto 120mtrs deep and is a great reel for that nice and light but no good for mechanical jigging.

Hi deacs, the general concensus is save up for a more suitable JIGGING reel. I too started out with a torium 30 (too wide, too fast), went to Trinidad 40n ect.. anyway have a look at previous threads about the Ocea and suff for prices and comparison. If you are serious about your jigging, (after a good session you will be hooked for ever), there is no room for compromise with your gear. Again, look through the threads-it makes good informative reading and can be quite funny. Also, the reel will need to sit on a decent rod built for the job. Don't discount the Torsa reels on a matching t curve. This combo can be bought for about $1000 (Torsa 16/200gram rod) and will provide awesome enjoyment..this is about $650 cheaper than the Ocea/top end rod option (NZ retail prices). If its half decent sized fish your chasing then I would stay away from a Torium 30. Blew mine up 2nd trip on a 15kg kingie. Probably had the drag cranked up to far for 80lb braid and it made awfull sounds of breaking metal! Got it repaired no-charge but sold it immediately afterwards and stepped up to the 4000P. My comments echo gamekeeper and Lev Nev in that spending the extra $$ on top of line gear is well worth the investment.
