What seems to be happening with these real? I have read on other forums they arent being produced anymore? Whats the story?

Reason for asking is a mate of mine is after a jigging set and Ill suggest one but am unsure about parts etc if he needs them. Any owners out there shed some light on the situation, and how they handle overall as a jigging reel?

yeah we import & sell them Ben.  Jigging Master co-designed the Oceanus with Pro Gear.

Pro Gear went through a change of ownership and decided to relocate the factory, they basically shut down for a year.  Now they are back but I'm uncertain where they are at regarding reels for now.
 
The OC30 is actually a decent jigging reel - superb for $450!  Initially designed to accomodate a 2nd set of drag washers, these reels are beautifully made and a perfect size and feel for jigging and live baiting.

Almost every king I have caught since august last year has been caught on my oc30. Its easy to jig with and has a super smooth drag. I think when I first got it we could pull 14kg of drag out before loosing freespool but its probably hanging around 12-13kg now. Most of the time I lock and load on jigs and just go straight to sunset on decent fish. If anything a little more drag... would make them a ton better
its just a bummer the twin drags arent avalibleCry 
the clicker is enough to hold a live jack mac when your drifting them in a rod holder and its light enough to hold for when you are drifting deeper reefs.... when we livebait in 6-12m sometimes you can just clamp the spool and muscle the fish out if things start looking nastyWink

mate had one that crapped out twice after only a few fish.  I Dont know the details of what happened to it but he changed to a different reel after all the hassels.  I have heard there have been a few probs with them from others.  These probs may well have been dealt with in the newer models being produced.
He said when it was working properly it was a very nice reel however.

I dont know exactly what happened but was to do with the drag range.  He sent it back and was given back fixed.  lasted a couple of fish and went again.  It wasn't the drag washers.  I will try find out what went wrong with it.
 
I had a bit of a go with it when he got it and it was real nice to use.  He just didnt want the hassle if it went again when he was out fishing.

for $450 you cant expect too much.ie, torium,saltist all in that price range.
I first started jigging with a tekota and that was not a wise choice it did the job but not for long.

drag range is overated. All you need is the 2 buttons (strike, sunset) LOL

So general consensus would be its better than a saltist?

also got one of them Embarrassed and they are both similar in feel but I am a bit of a lever drag fan so its more a personal preference.

I used one at the 3 Kings last year and it performed extremely well. Landed some nice Kings on it up to 26 kgs.
 
Haven't heard of anyone having any mechanical trouble with their OC 30 apart from Stu's friend above so that would seem to be an isolated case.
 
I'll reiterate what Chris said, for the money they are a superb reel and are beautifully made. They have a particularly nice feel to them.

Most soft bait reel's are better than a saltist, have not come across one yet that i can get the drag above 6kg, have spoken to Daiwa about it and they say there is no problem, i say there is.Out of the 3 reel mentioned [torium, saltist, progear] the pro gear would have to be the better one,as it is made by jigger's for jigger's.

I though I was the only one with the problem Cam. When I first got my saltist, I couldn't get more than 3-4kg of drag. I opened up the reel and found that a pair of the metal and fibre washers had grease between them. It looked like it had come off the shaft when the factory slid the washers over the shaft. After I cleaned them up and bed in the drags on the first stroppy kingy, I reckon I got about 7-8kg drags now- straight off the reel.
 
I tried out the Oceanus on a 4kg skippy Smile. Felt like a very smooth bit of kit.

I have found my saltist to be a really good little reel (albeit with a pissy little handle [recently demoted to a sweet bottom fishing rig]).

Drag was an easy 8kg out of it from the box. A little bit sticky, but I cleaned the excess grease off the washers and now its way better. Has dealt to some nice kings and a bunch of ****ty sharks in vanuatu.

A little too much grease in a reel is not really a big problem at all for me.

The general consenses i would argree is the Progear is a far better reel than the Saltist and the Torium but like anything in the right hands anything will do the job jigging 4 k's just what will last the longest .........I was on the hunt last year 4 a light reel, something i could jig with all day and not be bothered by my injurys {Carpel tunnel} some call it w***ers cramp i call it THE DAMMED so i bought 1 saltist 30T and used it for about 2 months and its a great reel but not for the jigging mutt i am  Anyway my point being
Anything will do but not everything will last-
K caught on a saltist at the begining of the season before, all the RATS turned up
Now i use it to bait fish with for turkys and pups in aprox 110mtrs and its great for that.the missus bought me a camera 4 my Bday and i cant stop taking photos .Arnt they a magnificent fish and nothing compares in welly waters power to weight ratio
