I am wanting to know of the best place to source one of these. Is japan the best or is it easier to get them from other places? Or would one of you guys like to sell one?

I notice on the JM in Perth DVD that they predominantly use the Oceanus 30. Is that because they are linked to the company or do they believe that they are better for jigging than the Oceas'?

They seem linked to the Oceanus 30. In their NZ, 3 Kings  "Fighting In the Dayline" DVD you'll see them using OJ's and Accurates. Having owned and used all three I can tell you the OJ 4000P/5000P is hard to beat as it comes with a long handle arm, 15 kg drag and narrow spool straight out of the box. It is very smooth and powerful too. The Oceanus 30 is a very well made reel, has some minor limitations, which can be resolved but for about $450 it's a very good buy - it's not an OJ 4000P/5000P but doesn't come with their price tag either.

For the lighter jigging rods such as the JM 150, 200 and 250 the Daiwa Saltiga overhead reels are the "bees knees". Pricey but beautifully machined and strong.

Thanks, does the extra width of the 5000p induce any noticeable wobble? Is there any real benefit in the extra line capacity in normal depths up to say 150m?
Sorry about all the questions guys, just an excited newbie wanting desperately to get into this new style of jigging. Have read nearly every post, but sometimes people change their views on things after a bit more experience - hence some of my questions may have been answered a while ago, bear with me Geek

I have both the OJ 4000P and OJ 5000P models. There is a slight advantage to the 4000P for line lying when under load as it is slightly narrower and fractionally lighter too. This is off-set by the 100-120 m of extra line that the 5000P can carry. Haven't noticed any noticeable wobble with the 5000P as it's still quite a narrow reel. If you only fish up to 150m then the 4000P is fine. If you jig for Bluenose or Puka and Bass in 200 m plus then obviously the 5000P is a better choice. Taken overall the OJ5000P is the more versatile reel of the two.
 
I'll add here that ChrisW is responsible for the current popularity of the OJ4000P/5000P reels in this country. He was the first Kiwi (as far as I know) to advocate their advantages for the Japanese style "Mechanical Jigging" which he also introduced to NZ. It's not only a highly effective method, it's also an extremely addictive sport as it's practitioners will tell you.

Cheers Chopsticks for the help. In a short time I have seen that Chris has done an awesome job of introducing and promoting the style, I have even seen threads from forums 3-4 years ago where he was giving and seeking advice on jigging. I am about to show my gratitude by buying a rod and accessories from him, if he sold the reels I would buy one of them too.
Big thanks to the rest of you who also share experience freely, a great help and seemingly goes against the grain of society in general, very cool in my books.

I just made contact with EastTackle and Andrew there has informed me that Shimano Japan have discontinued the Ocea Jigger 4000Pafter a 6 year production run and a new model of the OCEA Jigger shall be released anytime soon.

Anyone else heard this?

Nope, very interesting. If it's true then one thing is for sure and that is it will be a lot more expensive.

Shimano have re-commenced manufacture of the OJ4000P after a break.  Unsure whether the delay was to introduce a new model?  I have mine arriving April in time for the 3 Kings trip.

he was saying they(EastTackle) were all expecting Shimano to release it after the Osaka Tackle Show which is the main event in Japan when new models are released into the market. The show closed today, but as of yet, they have not heard any news.

Plat in Japan normally gives advance notice of new models but there's nothing on his site about it. Chris is right about the break in production as the OJ 4000/5000's were hard to get for a few months late last year.

Minstor Tackle in Malaysia has them at $580 NZD at todays exchange rate including postage. They're excellent to deal with too as are most sellers.

If there is not a major difference in the price of the item then supporting the NZ supplier is the wise thing to do. In this regard I must say that Douglas Johnson, the Shimano importers/distributors in NZ really do back their products and provide an excellent service. It's a shame that when they decided to bring in some OJ 4000/5000 reels late last year that they didn't get the "P" version. Probably because they have the mistaken mind set that a jigging reel must have a high gear ratio.
