Had an amazing experience at Whangaparaoa (Army Bay) a week or so ago with a pod of Orca in very shallow (under 5M) water. It was just on dawn and they swam into the bay. I had 2 different creatures approach the boat and glide beside me and look up at me. Incredible.

A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat.

That's brilliant mate!

Very cool - I was super fortunate to see (most likely) this same pod chasing stingrays and even managed to get a few half decent shots! I put them up here on the forum somewhere??

Incredible animals - fortunately they haven't taken on the behaviour of their European counterparts off Spain and Portugal that attack water craft. They are responsible for a few sinkings of vessels.

They are regular visitors to the Manukau harbour and they've swam under my boat. during one of our comps they were in the harbour and one was rubbing against the anchor rope of one boat. They got some great pics. Let's hope they don't take it further. I am guessing they are cruising up the coast and will be on their way down the other side so may be we will get to see them again soon.

That's amazing Smudge - great experience I'm sure.

I don't think they will take it further as every interaction with Orca pods has been hassle free around the world except for the European ones.

Behavioural scientists are not not entirely sure if it's an act of aggression or one of playfulness.

Theories say that the matriarch was hit by a sail craft and associated it with danger which was then 'taught' to the rest of the pod. Another mob of scholars suggest that playful males chase the sail boats closely underwater and one inadvertantly managed to ram into the aft of the vessel and dislodge something. This was like a game of cat and mouse and that the Orca got his fun by catching this piece that fell off.

Personally, sounds like bollocks but what would I know.

They are beautiful creatures.

I've had two close orca encounters, one on a jetski and one on a Mac420.

In the first, I was fishing on the drift and four orca charged the jetski from four different directions. Sounds dramatic, but that's what happened. They stopped just short of the ski and had a look at me, then buggered off. That got the heart pumping!

In the second encounter, I had been snorkelling with kids in Whangarei Harbour. Not long after we got out the water, a family of orca appeared and came right up to the boat. The largest, (I assume the male) was huge. It's dorsal fin was about 1.5 metres high. Breathtaking. No phone or camera on the boat between two adults and three kids!

Wow, that's close. I've been that close to them several times but a boat offers a little more security. Well that's what I tell myself!

So yday, I finished fishing. Packing up. Motor off, and heard a whoosh. Looked up and 2 pilot whales real close. They just mooched around the boat for 5 minutes. 5-10m away. Very cool. Had no camera. regretting. My phone doesn't take pics. Vtu.
