After 5 months of a lot of use, my trailer winch rope is looking a bit ratty.. Any thoughts about the pros and cons of various systems? Straps vs ropes? Different rope types?

Had the orange rope for about 3 years, have Brocken it a couple of times so have doubled the last 1500 mm up. Have a big trailer boat (8.5m) so lot of weight. Just used a bowline knot. Works real good, never go back to wire.

Some of the cheap ones don't last. My first effort changing from wire didn't last 12 months before it started breaking but my last one is years old and no sign of failing. I'd never go back to wire.

How thick would the spectra need to be to haul a 5.5 hardtop plus gear, fuel etc up?

I went with the seat belt style strap from burnsco and find it great, good strong hook, can't load up one side of the winch and jam and its pretty nice on the old hands compared to wire rope.

The orange rope is far better than the blue, it's harder, I find the blue is softer and frays more.

1/4 to 3/8" would be more than sufficient for a trailer winch. Part of the towing bridle for our 37' contender was on 3/8" and we towed that thing over 3000nm

The rope manufacture will have the working load and breaking load of the rope.

I had that on mine until Jan the year when it snapped while winching the boat on.
Like anything they wear out over time, mine had started to fade and it had the smallest of nicks on the strap, no warning when it let go, just the fastest scramble you've seen grabbing the boat before it slid off the trailer with the grand-kids still aboard. Did a real fast knot with the remains of the strop and avoided disaster.

I replaced it with the "rope" mention on these posts and find that it's good, but I did prefer the wide strap for the reasons you indicate.

not sure how UV resistant the ropes are, but I would suggest not running the rope out and hooking it on the back of the trailer in the sun all day..

I squirt heaps of CRC regularly on my winch wire - its a dry wire coming under load that breaks the strands. You can see the CRC oozing out of the cable under load. On my last boat I did 18 years on the same wire and no broken ends

How would the pink soft rope type  go on an electric boat trailer winch? I use an electric winch to load round silage bales into a feedout trailer and going to try a pink round rope on mine.It looks like I will have to remove the wire rope leveler in the winch. The wire rope only lasts about one winter of use
